There were no right comedies and tragedies in the vernacular drama that flourished in Italy before 1500, for these medieval plays were either religious or farcical, dramatizations of biblical stories, of the lives of saints and martyrs, or dramatized episodes of peasant, bourgeois, or clerical life. Sixteenth-century Italian drama incorporated some features of the native popular plays, to be sure, but the most important single factor in its formation was imitation of classical models. During the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries there was only one classical model for tragedy, and that was Seneca. The splendid remains of ancient Greek tragedy, the seven extant plays of Aeschylus, seven of Sophocles, and eighteen of Euripides, were scarcely known to the early humanists.
