By the early sixteenth century, Castiglione could distinguish in The Book of the Courtier between an inferior artificial knowledge and sapienza that enabled individuals to live civile, in society. By the sixteenth century, the new civility began to make its appearance in England. The links between noble lineage and social power weakened and in their place emerged a new order based not on hospitality, charity, and honorific violence, but on a different set of humanist civil values which saw society as an artificial construct and civility as a noble art."
