A new, abridged edition, published in Nottingham in 1812 with the first English translation published from London in 1790 by John Hall. The original text was published in four volumes from Amsterdam, 1777-1779 under the title, Katechismus der Natuur.It was written by Joannes Florentius Martinet as part of his twenty-book corpus of educational works for children on nature, history and theology. L2953 In de ogenschijnlijk eerbiedig getoonzette 'Aanmerkingen' van J. de Vries op de 'Katechismus' van Martinet valt een duidelijk ironische ondertoon te bespeuren die af en toe verandert in regelrechte spot. Dat gebeurt bijvoorbeeld als Martinet per ongeluk ook de planeet Venus van een maan voorziet. De Vries moet nu wel aannemen dat het om een nieuwe ontdekking gaat, want zyn Eerw. is te zeer ervaren in de Sterrekunde, dan dat hy slegts, zonder eenige reden of bewys, iets dergelyks zo onbedacht ter neer zou gesteld, en openbaar bekend gemaakt hebben. Martinet heeft zijn criticus nooit beantwoord. In 1778 schreef hij aan een vriend (de 'Aanmerkingen' op de eerste twee delen waren toen al verschenen), dat deze er wel voor had gezorgd dat 't Boek daardoor nog sterker wordt verkogt.…
