Das Buch ist kein Benimm- oder Moderatgeber, sondern ein philosophischer Essay über den Gentleman als zeitloses Ideal menschlichen Verhaltens. Der Autor argumentiert, daß ein Gentleman weder durch Herkunft noch Reichtum definiert wird, sondern durch Charakter und Lebenshaltung. Scherer versteht den Gentleman als Menschen, der auch in schwierigen Situationen Würde bewahrt, Rücksicht nimmt und unabhängig von äußeren Erfolgen nach Anstand und innerer Haltung lebt. Das Buch plädiert dafür, diese Werte als Form moderner Lebenskunst wiederzuentdecken, statt den Gentleman nur mit Kleidung oder Etikette zu verbinden.
