Very good A pleasing copy of this Festschrift marking the retirement (in 1981) of the British Marxist literary critic, inscribed by Kettle to old University of Leeds colleagues, Walter and Doreen Newlyn. Including contributions by Raymond Williams, Barbara Hardy and Angus Calder. Kettle (19161986), Doreen and Walter Newlyn (1915-2002), the theatre advocate and her husband the British economist, all taught at the University of Leeds during the late 1940s and early 1950s, with the literary scholar having "a profound influence" on many students, "notably" Dipak Nandy, Wole Soyinka and Ngugi wa Thiong'o (ODNB). Kettle's most significant book, An Introduction to the English Novel, appeared in two volumes in 1951 and 1953. In 1970 he joined the Open University as its first Professor of Literature.
