Vanity-press novel, touted as the "Special Educational Edition" on the rear-panel blurb (like we're supposed to be convinced that there was ever any *other* edition?), by an author who was "a college teacher during the twenties" before leaving academia for the business world. Even decades later, however, he obviously retained some strong opinions about higher education, which are expressed at some length in the dust jacket blurb, and which are embodied in the plot of his novel, which is set in 1926. It's pitched as an "indictment of the weakness and servility of 'higher learning'," and although he insists he has "no possible ax to grind," the basic setup suggests otherwise: it involves "the conflict between egotistical, neurotic, vindictive Justin Homer Ashman, head of the English Department, on the one hand, and a group of young teachers led by the serious, liberal Douglas Hamilton, who believes in education rather than in campus politics, on the other." Any guess which of those figures might have been a stand-in for the author (described elsewhere as "long active in liberal political circles")? The school depicted in the book is, of course, the fictional "State University," located in the equally fictional city of Belle Ridge, but let it be noted for the record that Mr. Larson was educated at Kalamazoo College and the University of Michigan, and that his brief teaching career took place between 1923 and 1927, first at Michigan State Normal College and then at the University of Idaho. The book features perfectly dreadful jacket art that I'm surprised the artist was willing to be credited for. Illustrated by (dj design) Howard Morris (illustrator).

Despite his humble beginnings, he graduated from Kalamazoo College, then the University of Michigan with a Ph.D. in English literature. He taught at what are n…ow Eastern Michigan University and the University of Idaho. Unwilling to 'play the game' of formal academia, he purchased a business in Detroit, retiring at age 53 to devote himself to research and writing. He wrote many books, particularly on the roots of Christianity, the IRS and the Federal Reserve. Along the way, we learn of his multiple marriages and how demographic change in Detroit severely affected his investments in rental properties. He was active in the Institute of Historical Review for many years and a longtime friend of historian Harry Elmer Barnes. 256 pages. Undated but appears to be circa 1986, probably from a small print run. Unmarked with above-average external wear. A sound example of this fascinating and truly illuminating life story. ; 8vo.
