Later burgundy pebbled cloth. = The complete Mollusca-section of the Zoologische Forschungsreisen in Australien und dem Malayische Archipel, being part 5(VI), published in the Denkschrif…ten der medicinisch-naturwissenschaftlichen Gesellschaft zu Jena, but with its own, separate title page. The material was collected by the German explorer, zoologist and evolutionary biologist Richard Wolfgang Semon (1859-1918), a pupil of Ernst Haeckel. Semon was ".a memory researcher who believed in the inheritance of acquired characteristics and applied this to social evolution. He is known for coining the terms engram" (Wikipedia). Von Martens described several species as new, especially from the Torres Strait and Queensland, making this a rare and little-known piece of Australiana. Later green, pebbled cloth with gilt title on the spine. = This forms the complete Mollusca part of Karl August Möbius' Beiträge zur Meeresfauna der Insel Mauritius und der…Seychellen. The title is misleading, as brackish and freshwater molluscs are included, as are land snails (on pp. 185-209), but the great majority is indeed formed by marine taxa. The first plate shows non-marine species. The part on land snail anatomy is by the German malacologist Gustav von Schacko (1824-1917), and there is an additional description of a land snail by Möbius. The contents entirely agree with the collation in Kabat and Boss. Provenance: Oval stamp of the Conchological Society with handwritten acquisition date 11.X.[19]12 on the title page, and in the blank area above the chapter title of the Vorbemerkungen (Preface). Small stamp of the American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) in the top margin of the title page, below a pencilled annotation, "from J. W. T.". Pencilled note of Wheldon and Wesley in the lower margin of the last plate verso. Endpapers a bit foxed, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Edges sprinkled red. = This beautifully illustrated work written by the German malacologist Karl Eduard von Martens (1831-1904) is ba…sed on material collected by the German botanist and explorer Heinrich Carl Haussknecht (1838-1903), who was active in the Middle East and adjacent countries. It deals with two groups, viz., the terrestrial and freshwater molluscs from the Caucasus south to Iraq and Iran, and marine molluscs from the Caspian Sea and Arabian (Persian) Gulf. Several species are described as new. The spelling Hausknecht, with a single 's' (e.g., in the title) is incorrect. Published in the series, Novitates Conchologicae, but not indicated as such (apparently also sold separately), and not specifically mentioned by Nissen. Provenance: stamp of Bibliothek Stojaspal, of the Austrian geologist Franz Stojaspal (1946-2012) in the top margin of the front free endpaper recto; small, rectangular cut out on title (not affecting any text); minor foxing ot toning to a few plates; otherwise very good, clean. Slightly later dark blue and black buckram with gilt tit…le on the spines. = Two parts of a massive work, part of an enormous publication, comprising 63 volumes in all, edited by the British zoologists (principally ornithologists) Osbert Salvin and Frederick DuCane Godman, which is renowned for its thorough treatment with detailed descriptions and fine illustrations. All parts - published between 1879 and 1915 - are much sought-after and uncommon to rare. The mollusc part, written by the German malacologist Karl Eduard von Martens (1831-1904) is one of least-seen sections. Plates 1-28 show land snails and are all beautifully coloured by hand. Plates 29-44 show freshwater clams, and a few Melampidae and Littorinidae (!), as well as (on Plate 44) various additional land shells, which are always uncoloured. Many species are new. Von Martens included a history of malacology for each of the included states, from Mexico to Panama, although Mexico is usually regarded as part of North America. The contribution by Godman is the last part published. It contains a fine narrative of the origin of the series, Biologia Centrali-Americana (and of the famous ornithological journal, The Ibis, which is still published); on the friendship between the editors, and of the various collection trips made or paid for by the editors. Provenance: stamp of the American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) in the top margin of the front free endpapers and titles. Godman's work with a short cut in one text page, and a strong bump at the lower outer corner. Von Martens's contribution with the plates slightly toned, but otherwise fine.
