"Der Gründer des Hauses Martell, Jean Martell, stammte aus Jersey. Er liess sich im Jahre 1715 in Cognac nieder und spezialisierte sich sehr bald auf den Handel mit Weinbrand aus der Cognacer Gegend. Dem Kundenkreis seines heimatlandes folgte bald die Kundschaft in Guernesey, England, Holland, Deutschland und Skandinavien. Als er im Jahre 1753 starb, hinterliess er ein aufblühendes Geschäft, dessen Bedeutung und Ruf auf gesunder Grundlage aufgebaut war. Im Jahre 1767 gründete die Witwe Martell ein Handeslunternehmen mit ihren beiden Söhnen Jean und Frédéric. Nach ihrem Tod im Jahre 1786 gaben die beiden Söhne der Firma den Namen 'Jean und Frédéric Martell', einige Jahre später, im Jahre 1807, wurde dieser Name in die Firma 'J. & F. Martell' umgewandelt."
