In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. First edition. The very scarce first edition of William Marshall's pioneering agricultural work, in which he documented his triumphs and lessons learnt from running a 300 acre farm. The first edition. Very scarce work. Complete with four plates. William Marshall's ambitious study of farm management in the late eighteenth century. The son of a Yeoman farmer, Marshall decided that a personal and practical approach was necessary in the study of agriculture, with at least a year's worth of observation needed to have a comprehensive overview of the subject. Therefore, in 1774, Marshall took on a farm near Croydon, keeping a detailed account for four years, before publishing his findings in this 'Minutes of Agriculture'. An important and pioneering work, this documents his successes and his mistakes from his time as farm manager. With notes from a previous owner, likely a farmer or a contemporary of the author, containing their thoughts on Marshall's work - largely positive, with notes such as "I think this a very good note" and "good reasoning". Collated, lacking leaf A1. Signature runs A2-Z, Aa-Zz, Aaa-Mmm. Pagination commences at 'The Digest of the Minutes' section, with pages prior to this being unnumbered. Bound in half calf with marbled paper-covered boards. Bound in half calf with marbled paper-covered boards. Endpapers renewed. Externally, very smart, with light rubbing to joints and extremities. A little fading to spine and head of front board. Ink inscription to front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with ink notations from a previous owner, and the odd additional modern pencil note. A few marks to title page and the odd spot. Lacking A1. Very Good Indeed. Not Stated (illustrator). book.…

In den WarenkorbFirst Edition. First edition, 2 volumes, 8vo, pp. [8], 413, [1]; [4], 66 [i.e., 366], [6] index; 2 engraved folding maps; original blue paper-covered boards, cream paper shelfbacks, manuscript title on spines; spines with several old discreet repairs, but generally a very good, sound copy. Includes a 52-page glossary of Yorkshire words, and an 11-page chapter on Yorkshire provincialisms. The Yorkshire dialect spans many regions (Leeds, Craven, Wakefield, Riding, etc.) each with variations in grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary. In the case of this glossary, Marshall has confined himself to rural and agricultural terms lest he be overwhelmed with the enormity of the task. "Modern agricultural historians have generally held that Marshall's works on English farming are superior to those of his rival, Arthur Young, as they are more systematically arranged and based on a more thorough knowledge of a district by personal residence there. Unlike Young, Marshall was cautious about experimentation, preferring rather to advocate the best practices approved by experienced farmers. On the other hand, he lacked Young's pithy and more readable style, and acquired fewer close contacts with the leading farming figures of the time. Marshall's career, indeed, suffered in some degree from his native bluntness and acid tongue, his pride, and his sensibility to slights. Nevertheless, from the independence of his views arose his remarkably early support for agricultural education, and his belief in the necessity of studying agriculture on a regional basis, both of which were ideas well before their time" (ODNB).…
