Scott's importance to literature really cannot be overstated - his work was highly influential and immensely popular across Europe at the time of writing and for many years afterwards. By profession, he was an advocate, judge and legal administrator, which he combined with his life as poet, novelist and historian. In later life he faced financial ruin, when Ballantyne Press collapsed amidst a UK banking crisis. Rather than become bankrupt, he decided to write his way free of the debt, and although when he died the still owed money, this was soon cleared by his Estate as his books continued to sell in substantial numbers. Sir Walter Scott and Scots Law, by David Marshall, M.C., M.A., B.L. A detailed exploration of Scott's novels, and how they tackled aspects of Scots Law within their stories. The book explores Waverley, Guy Mannering; The Antiquary; Black Dwarf, Old Morality, and Rob Roy; and Heart of Midlothian. Published by William Hodge & Company, Limited, Edinburgh and London, 1932. First edition. A scarce publication as a first edition. A good maroon cloth hardback with some bumping and wear. Blind stamped motif to front and gilt titles to spine. Cloth with some spotted stating and slight skew to top half of fore-edge, but all soundly bound. Text is clean and bright throughout. Some offsetting to first and last free endpapers. Contains frontispiece image of Members of the Scottish Bench and Bar, including Sir Walter Scott, with neighbouring tissue guard with printed pictorial outline guide to the image. A very nice copy of a scarce volume. Text in English. Prelims + 144pp. Weight: approximately 536g (unpacked). Dimensions: Approximately 255mm tall x 164mm wide x 22mm deep.
