An important, lasting autobiography in the literature of slave narratives. The 1872 11th edition, still undoubtedly very uncommon in the publisher's original printed wrappers. A solid, presentable copy to boot. Fragile and Good+ only, showing iunderstandable wear and aging. Very light chipping along the edges, mild water-staining to the rear panel and light foxing throughout. 12mo, 38 pgs. of text. The ownership signature of "Mrs. Hazel Whitney" (possibly of CT's --and specifically Yale's-- prominent Whitney family?) written in ink at the top of the front cover. Toward the mid 19th century, Mars became a noted political leader "in New England's freedmen community and in African American reform movements for temperance and enfranchisement". In 2021 Gov. Ned Lamont declared May 1st to be James Mars Day in Connecticut. …
