Hardcover. Zustand: Poor. Hardcover. Originally full leather, now compromised by a long life. Original boards. About half of the spine is missing and the other half is dangling limply from about an inch of the front hinge. This reveals all the backing paper and sewn cords on the spine. Rear cover attached but top cord only. Corners bumped and leather rubbed. Fore-edges dusty. The complete works of Marryatt in two volumes, bound together here in one large volume. 515 and 642 pages. There is a water stain to the bottom corner of the first 100 or so pages. Some foxing to the pages, but about average for its age. First two blank page are loose, attached only by their bottom halves. On the first blank (front endpaper) the name 'Sallie Bruce, Woodbourne' is signed. A printed bookplate with the name 'Sarah Bruce' on the inside front cover. Below that, another printed bookplate with the name A. M. Seddon, Sabot Hill, VA. September 22, 1883. Sarah Bruce, who went by Sallie, was the daughter of James Bruce. James Bruce died in 1837, at which time he was the third richest man in America. His daughter Sallie was raised at Woodbourne, their plantation in western Virginia. She went to finished school in Philadelphia and then married James Seddon - Seddon was a UVA graduate who would serve a term in Congress and then as Secretary of War for the Confederacy. I believe that A.M. Seddon was one of their children. This book, which has Sallie Bruce's signature from before her marriage was likely purchased during her time in Philadelphia and traveled with her from Woodbourne to Sabot Hill, her home on the banks of the James River. Its poor condition only adds to its charm as a historical item. An interesting association copy. Please email with questions or to request photos. Please note if there is a photograph beside this listing, it was put there by ABE, not by me, so it may not accurately show the book I am selling.
