In den WarenkorbMoscow: V Sinodal'noi Tipografii, 1837. Third Edition. Octavo (21 × 14 cm). Contemporary marbled wrappers; VII, [2], 95 pp. Good or better; light soil to first two pages; binding starting; wrappers torn along spine. Third edition of this famous anti-Semitic treatise, a medieval Christian apologetic purportedly written in the eleventh century, but most likely written around 1339 by Alphonsus Bonihominis. "The author, a converted Jew, collects passages from the Old Testament in support of Christianity. The medieval Latin text which purports to be translated from an Arabic original by the Dominican friar Alphonsus Bonihominis in 1339, had a tremendous diffusion and was frequently printed and translated. Since no Arabic original of the text has ever been found, Steinschneider suggests that Alphonsus composed the letter himself, and merely imitated a different work by a Jew Samuel written in support of Islam after his conversion to that religion" (Paul Oskar Kristeller, Platonism, 188). Specifically, scholars assume Bonihominis was inspired by the Ifham al-Yahud by Samuel of Fez, another anti-Semitic treatise by a Jewish thinker who converted to Islam after seeing Muhammed in a prophetic dream. The work was first translated into Russian by hieromonk Varlaam (Glovatskii) and published in St. Petersburg in 1778; further editions followed in 1782, 1786, and 1827 before the present one, which is stated to be the third edition. All editions are scarce: KVK, OCLC show a copy of a 1827 edition at Brandeis and an 1855 copy at the NYPL.…

In den Warenkorb12mo (97 x 145 mm). 29 (instead of 32) ff. Modern black calf. Rare post-incunabular Venetian edition of this eleventh-century anti-Jewish polemical text circulating under the name of Samuel of Morocco. Supposedly written originally in Arabic by the convert Samuel Abu Nasr ibn Abbas, son of Judah ibn Abbas of Fez, it was translated into Latin in the 14th century by the Spanish Dominican Alfonso Buonhombre. In its Arabic form, the work assumedly "claimed to prove the prophetic character of Jesus and Mohamed and argued that too many laws were added to the Torah by the Mishnah and Gemara. Buenhombre adapted the tract to present it as a Christian rather than Muslim polemic" (Jewish Encyclopedia). More recent scholarship (Marsmann, Epistel des Rabbi Samuel an Rabbi Isaak, 1971) indicates that Samuel is possibly fictitious and Alfonso was probably the actual author of the text. - The text occupied a durable place within late medieval and early modern Christian anti-Jewish controversy, repeatedly reissued in different centres and languages. This Venetian edition reflects the continued circulation of such polemical material in Italy at the opening of the sixteenth century. OCLC records only five copies (British Library, Oxford, Cornell, UCLA, Hebrew Union College); Edit 16 lists 14 holding libraries in Italy. - Lacking B1 and B8 as well as the final blank leaf. Light trace of worming to lower edge of fols. B7-C7. - Ink ownership of a mid-16th-century Croatian monk to title-page: "Est ad usum F[rat]ris Cornelii de Sibenico", with earlier note "vide hunc tractatum in hoc volumina adnexum a spinula italice versum". Erased, apparently early ink notes to top of title-page (trimmed, illegible) as well as bottom ("mimag", upside down). Latterly in the collection of the Dutch Arabist Pieter Sjoerd van Koningsveld (1943-2021) and acquired in the Dutch trade. - Edit 16, CNCE 28188. Nuovo, Alessandro Paganino, p. 149, no. 11. In den Warenkorbab illust. doct. Petro de la Cavalleria, Hispano ex civitate Caesaraugusta, anno 1450 . . Venice : apud Baretium de Baretijs,1592. Two works in one volume, quarto (225 x 160 mm), contemporary panelled vellum stamped with the initials L V M;[68], 156; [8], 19 leaves; second work has separate title page: Aureus Rabbi Samuelis tractatus ad Isaach rabbi sinagogæ quae est in Subiulmeta in formam epistol[a]e conscriptus . / qui quidem tractatus . R.D. Don Martini Alfonsi Viualdi . præcedentis glossatoris, ac tandem ab omni iniuria uindicatus, correctus, emendatus, iterum in lucem prodit; both works in Latin, with commentary surrounding the text; verso of front free-endpaper with early annotation in Latin remarking on the rarity of the book, main title with old ownership inscription of B. H. Cowper and ex libris stamp (strengthened in pen) of Morris Samuels; very occasional pencilled marginalia by a later owner, main title somewhat darkened and with some underlining, two leaves of the second work with some loss of text due to old restoration, otherwise clean and sound throughout. The main work is the firstedition of an important treatise on Christian religion written around 1450 bya lawyer from a converso family in Saragossa, Pedro de la Cavallería. Although addressed to both Jews and Saracenes, it is primarily directed against Judaism, and 'it contains one of the earliest references to the Jewish kabbalah in a Christian book' (Harvard University Library). Very rare. No copy traced at auction on Rare Book Hub. The second work is the epistle by Rabbi Samuel Marochitanus to Rabbi Isaac. 'Samuel Israeli of Morocco(Latin:Samuel Marochitanus,SamuelisMaroccani) was a supposed Jewish convert to Christianity who lived at the close of the 11th century. The details of his life and the works ascribed to him have been shown to be likely 15th century forgeries. Samuel Israeli is said to have come toToledofromFez, in Morocco, about the year 1085, where he became a convert to Christianity.[3]According to Christian tradition, before his conversion was completed he addressed a letter to Rabbi Isaac, a Jew in theKingdom of Morocco, in which he says: I would fain learn of thee, out of the testimony of the law and the prophets, and other Scriptures, why the Jews are thus smitten. Is this a captivity wherein we are, which may be properly called the perpetual anger of God, because it has no end; for it is now above a thousand years since we were carried captive byTitus? And yet our fathers, who worshipped idols, killed the prophets, and cast the law behind their back, were punished only with aseventy-years' captivity, and then brought home again. But now there is no end of our calamities, nor do the prophets promise any. Soon after his conversion Rabbi Samuel appears to have returned to Morocco, whence his surname, and there to have held a conference on religion with a learned Muslim, of which what purports to be his account, inMS., is to be found in the library of theEscurial. Transmission The famous epistle to Rabbi Isaac, ????, which was originally written inArabic, and gives in twenty-seven chapters a refutation of Jewish objections to the Christian faith, was translated from theHebrewinto theLatinby the DominicanAlfonso de Buen Hombre(Alfonsus Bonihominis) in 1329, under the title,Tractatulus multum utilis ad convincendum Judæos de errore suo, quem habent de Messia adhuc venturo, et de observantia legis Mosaicæ('A very useful treatise to convince the Jews of their error, which they have about the Messiah yet to come, and about the observance of the Mosaic law'), and often since, and has been inserted in theBibliotheca Patrum, xviii, 1519; into Italian byG. F. Brunati(Trident. 1712); into German by W. Link (Altenburg, 1524), and inserted inLuther's works, v, 567?583; and often since; by E. Trautmann (Goslar, 1706); by F. G. Stieldorff (Trier, 1833); into English byTh. Calvert, under the title,Demonstration of the true Messiah, by R. Samuel, a converted Jew. A Spanish translation of this letter still remains in MS. in the library of the Escurial. It has, however, been suggested that theEpistolaSamuelisMaroccaniwas actually compiled much later, in the 15th century, as a piece of popular anti-Jewish writing.' (Wikipedia).…
