Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Everything seems to be going right for Julian Spencer. The brilliance of the young composer's work is beginning to be recognized, and he is engaged to marry a beautiful woman. There's just one thing that stands in the way of his happiness. In the attic, behind a locked door, lives Julian's monstrous half-brother, the deformed result of a mad scientist's botched experiment, a creature with a ravenous, insatiable appetite for raw, bloody meat . G. S. Marlowe's bizarre horror novel I Am Your Brother (1935) was published to positive reviews from bemused critics, who admitted they had no idea what the book was actually about, and became a cult favorite in the 1930s. This edition reproduces the original jacket art by Rex Whistler and includes a new introduction by Phil Baker, who casts a new light on the book's obscure author. 'Genuine horror . it will keep you from sleeping for some time.' - New Yorker 'A story distorted into real horror . Marlowe shows a new way to make flesh creep.' - Time Magazine 'A piece of exciting lunacy . The projection of a nightmare . The book has a weird excitement of its own . a very mad thriller.' - Sunday Times (London) 'This is a remarkable novel . the phantasmagoric writing . leaves one with the impression of a sort of mad genius on the part of the writer. The story is indubitably rapid and vivid, and sometimes genuinely moving.' - Saturday Review.…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Good dj. First American Edition. [spine moderately turned, tiny chunk out of cloth of front hinge near base of spine, light soiling to page edges, internally very clean; jacket well-worn with various small tears/creases, minor paper loss at several corners, large chunk missing at base of spine, soiling to rear panel]. Very uncommon novel by a somewhat enigmatic author (who may or may not have died in World War II). Set in London, it tells the story of Julian, a tormented young composer who discovers that his late mother had for years been keeping his monstrously deformed brother (apparently the result of some kind of artificial-insemination experiment gone awry) confined in the attic of their house, feeding him raw meat and reading him fairy stories. After Mom gets hit by a bus, the responsibility for Brother now falls on Julian, who (being of delicate and artistic temperament) is already not exactly the most stable individual on the planet. A very strange novel (described by one writer as "a little like 'The Dunwich Horror' with a London setting"), it was quite a sensation in its day, but was apparently never reprinted and is now nearly impossible to find. J. Maclaren-Ross, writing about his encounter with Marlowe in the late 1930s, said the author told him that the novel "originated as a bedtime story told to the children of Sir Roderick and Lady Jones [Enid Bagnold, to whom the book is dedicated] while staying with them in the country." The author also spent a little time in Hollywood in the mid-1930's, where he made some minor (uncredited) contributions to the screenplay of DAVID COPPERFIELD. This may not be an especially pretty example of the rare dust jacket, but at least the ultra-creepy front-panel illustration is intact. (Note that while the jacket art is uncredited -- unless the artist's signature appears on a piece that's now missing -- it seems obviously the work of Rex Whistler.). Illustrated by (dj) Rex Whistler [uncredited] (illustrator).…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. The First UK printing published by Collins, London in 1935. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. Some pushing to the spine ends. Slight dulling of the gilt titling to the spine with a little dustiness to the text-block. Mild offsetting to the blank end-papers. Attractive bookplate of John Haddon Crowd Holman Sutcliffe to the front pastedown. Underneath the bookplate, there is a small penned inscription : 'Lincoln 1967 2/6'. Sutcliffe was an 'affable and bohemian craftsman-decorator who transformed country houses and had a Farrow & Ball paint named after him' (Times obit. 21/9/22)). The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good+ condition. To the verso, there is some tape reinforcement to the upper and lower edges. A small chip to the lower front panel. Light toning and fading to the spine. Some age related markings and light scuffing to the rear panel in places. The Rex Whistler wrapper artwork remains very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. 'G. S. Marlowe was the pseudonym of Gabriel Beer-Hofmann, about whom not much is known. He was born in 1901, the son of Viennese Jews, and was active in London in the 1920s and '30s as a theatre director, screenwriter, and author. Records indicate he also travelled to America at least three times between 1926 and 1934, and he may have been involved in screenwriting in Hollywood. In 1934, he married Sybil Ryall at Westminster St. Margaret in London, and in 1939 he legally changed his name to Gabriel Sebastian Marlowe. His sole literary success was 'I Am Your Brother' (1935), which garnered positive (if bemused) critical reviews and attracted a cult following. According to his friend Julian Maclaren-Ross, Marlowe left England for Norway in 1940, and it was long presumed that he perished there during the Second World War, a rumour he apparently never bothered to contradict. However, more recent evidence indicates that he lived the remainder of his life quietly in England and died in 1971 at St. Albans, Herefordshire' (Valancourt Books). A very scarce title.
