Not only course in the U. S., but also courses within Europe strongly increase in popularity. There is a great variety of tender, from language courses that take only a few weeks or months, to so-called High-School-Years, professional business courses and even work and travel programs. At a first glance, it is very difficult to decide what to choose, but I would like to concentrate on language courses for students that last only a few weeks. I wanted to know why this is so fashionable nowadays and I began to think about this topic more intensively. I asked myself if this would not be a great thing for me to do, too. In the following pages I am going to examine such language courses in detail. I will present the different types of courses you can choose and the selection of accommodation available. There will also be an evaluation. I lead through a survey at Linguatime Language School in Sliema, Malta, to find out why so many students go on language holidays and if there is any progress possible at all. It has two parts, A and B. I distributed one at the beginning and one at the end of my stay in Malta to see if the students' expectations were fulfilled or not. There can be seen positive and negative aspects that hopefully reveal the real image of such a trip. After my evaluation I am going to compare two particular language schools in Malta, the aspects will be the variety of courses, the accommodation types, the prices and the teachers. As a last point, in my conclusion, I am going to sum up the evaluation, so you will be able to see for yourself if such language courses really keep their promises. But at first, I want to have a closer look on the history of the country I chose for my stay. Malta has always been an interesting country for me because so many different cultures left their remains on its grounds. And although it is close to the African coast, it is still a part of Europe, which makes the journey much easier. Another advantage of Malta is the currency, for they have obtained the Euro in 2004. The thing I liked best of this island is that they have English as an official language. There are not so many countries so far in the south where you can speak English with native speakers and enjoy the warm climate as well; especially not in Europe.

It is no longer I, but another whose life is just beginning.' (Samuel Beckett)These words by Samuel Beckett (1906 -1989), a remarkable literary talent of the past century, illustrate quite well the connection between Beckett and his stories. Quite often the writer used parts from his own life as models for his novels, poems and short stories. In the scope of this paper this will be exemplified on a relatively unknown short story written by him in 1934, 'One Case in a Thousand'. At the same time, I would like to show another influence on Beckett's work besides his biography. Therefore, the relationship between the two Irish writers Samuel Beckett and James Joyce will also be a central part of this work. This influence will be examined by a comparison of the above mentioned short story written by Beckett and another one written by Joyce, namely 'A Painful Case' (1914).Beckett's experiences gave him many sources of inspiration for his work, as his literary career was not always secure and success at times out of grasp. There were many disturbances, private as well as job-related ones, and his path was not always straight-lined. Writing seemed to be a cure when life was hardly bearable. It was not until the late 1930s, after the publication of Murphy in 1938 and also after the Second World War in particular, that he became quite well-known. He found a larger circle of readers which enabled him to concentrate on his creative literary work at last, which was finally acknowledged by the award of the Nobel Prize in 1969. Today, his plays 'Endgame' (1957) and 'Waiting for Godot' (1952) are well-known across the globe. However, the work which formed the major part of his writing, such as his poems, plays and short stories, is still not entirely common ground. This is one of the reasons why I wanted to focus on his short story 'One Case in a Thousand', and also, because it contains a lot of autobiographical hints.

A lot of research of attitudes towards varieties for the educational sector has been done, but the aim of this paper is rather to show whether this attitude is also influenced by visual stimuli and how non-natives in Germany evaluate the different ways of speaking English, to have an impression of how these attitudes in everyday encounters may look like. Consequently, there are several hypotheses which are to be tested by two questionnaires and with the help of the TV series 'Downtown Abbey'.

This period is especially important with regard to the Jacobite Rebellion and its implications after its defeat at Culloden. This lost battle not only ended the Stuart aspirations for the Scottish-English throne, it also marked the start of a brutal campaign against the Highland culture and Gaelic language with the aim of erasing it (cf. Oliver 2011: 320f.).In retrospect, Scottish nationalism became de facto extinct in the decades that were to follow. In Scott's early lifetime, people were therefore badly informed about their country's history, the clan structure diminished and the Lowlands close to the English border were more attached to England than to their own fragmented country. Many Scots immigrated to the colonies across the Atlantic, and those who stayed were busy trying to survive, with little interest in the past or politics (cf. Oliver 2010: 355f.).The following chapters will outline the development from this fragmented state of affairs towards the deep consciousness of nationality that permeates in Scotland today in addition to how Scott personally contributed to this transformation and how he continues to echo in today's literature (> Diana Gabaldon s 'Outlander') and popular culture, notably within mass media (> the TV adaptation of the 'Outlander'-series on starz) as well as the tourism industry.

As a result, the thesis aims at classifying the authors' view on Churchill's attitude towards Zionism in relation to the Palestine mandate and British policy in the respective periods, as well as capturing Churchill s reality in connection to Zionism. Historians have continuingly challenged his actions as being opportunistic and self-serving, while others claim they were rather evangelical and the result of deep compassion with the Jewish race and their sufferings.

Jahrhundert hinein. Hierfür habe ich mich vor allem auf die Überblickswerke von Andreas Haratsch, Gerhard Oestreich und Burghart Schmidt gestützt. Thema des zweiten Kapitels ist die Virginia Bill of Rights. Ich beleuchte kurz die Hintergründe und Umstände, die zu ihrer Entstehung führten und stelle konkret die aufgeführten Menschenrechte mit Blick auf die vorangegangen historischen Überlegungen vor. Anschließend stelle ich dar, wie sich diese Erklärung auf Staat und Gesellschaft in Nordamerika auswirkte und wie diese Entwicklung in Frankreich und England aufgenommen wurde. Die französische Déclaration des droits de l homme et du citoyen bildet den Gegenstand des dritten Kapitels. Hier stelle ich ebenfalls knapp die Situation vor der Revolution dar, bevor ich mich konkret (im Spiegel der Geschehnisse von 1776) mit den deklarierten Rechten der Erklärung auseinandersetze. Die folgenden Veränderungen in Staat und Gesellschaft sind ebenfalls Teil dieses Abschnittes. Grundlage für diese beiden Kapitel bildeten neben den beiden Originaltexten von 1776 und 1789 hauptsächlich das politische Lehrbuch von Richard Saage, erschienen in der Reihe 'Grundwissen Politik', das 'Kritische Wörterbuch zur Französischen Revolution' und das Werk von Sigmar-Jürgen Samwer. Den Schluss bilden ein kurzer Vergleich der beiden Revolutionen und Erklärungen sowie ein Fazit. (Literaturnachweise siehe am Ende der Arbeit).
