In den WarenkorbA collection of materials related to Princeton University physicist Gerard Kitchen O'Neill's plans for human habitation and manufacturing in outer space, utilizing his invention of mass drivers (also known as electromagnetic catapults) to launch things into space without the use of chemical rockets. It includes a printout of the original Mass Driver program by Mark Senn of Purdue University-- perhaps the most historically significant item in the collection--its translation into BASIC, documentation of the mass driver project, and numerous drawings by prolific illustrator Cal Sacks for an article about O'Neill's ideas of habitation in space that were popularized in his 1977 book The High Frontier and others. Archive consists of: 1. "Mass-driver archives," an envelope with Mark Senn's name and address labeled on it, roughly 40 or 50 pages photocopied documents with notes in an unknown hand. 2. "Mass-driver notes," another envelope with Senn's details, containing three staplebound copies of the mass driver program in BASIC. Some handwritten notes, likely by Mendenhall. 3. A program from the 1992 funeral of O'Neill at Princeton University Chapel. 4. "Mass-driver Simulation Project," November 17, 1984 by Mark Senn. Printout on dot matrix paper. Brief note by Senn jotted on verso of one page, pick-up lines for a woman named Kathy with his phone number. 5. "Mass-driver Program [in BASIC] from Fred Mendenhall," dated June 21, 1985. Numerous gatherings of pages of dot matrix printouts. 6. "Mass-driver Stuff" dated Feb. 1984. Printout on dot matrix paper. 7. "Mass-driver Program Listing and run[?] 17 Geb 1984" by Mark Senn. Printout on dot matrix paper, numerous gatherings of pages, may include other related data. 8. Seven illustrations of O'Neill's concepts of outer space living on Bainbridge boards roughly ranging from 14 x 12" to 15 x 19". Stamp on verso of one of the boards of Cal Sacks, the illustrator; presumably these are either his illustrations or were done under his supervision. They're highly unusual '80s futurism that would not look out of place as cover art for a sci fi novel. 9. "1981 Micro Courier." A brad bound portfolio of computer correspondence printed out on dot matrix paper, perhaps an early email program. Lots of addresses and notes for media campaigns. A highly unusual collection of materials documenting the activities of O'Neill's Space Studies Institute and his associates as they attempted to bring his futuristic visions to reality in the twilight of the Cold War and the dawn of the computer age. Much of it appears to be extremely scarce. …
