First edition, second printing of this work on the famed baseball team. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated. Presentation copy, inscribed by hall of famer Roger Maris on the front free endpaper, "To Gary Good Luck Roger Maris." Maris played in the minor leagues from 1953 to 1956, and made his major league debut for the Cleveland Indians in 1957. He was traded to the Kansas City Athletics during the 1958 season, and to the New York Yankees after the 1959 season. Maris is most well known for setting a new Major League Baseball single-season home run record with 61 home runs in 1961, Maris finished his playing career as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals in 1967 and 1968. Maris was an American League All-Star from 1959 through 1962,Âan ALÂMost Valuable PlayerÂin 1960 and 1961, and an ALÂGold Glove AwardÂwinner in 1960. New York Yankees immortal, a star outfielder from 1957 to 1968, holding the major league home run record (61) for 1961; voted the American League's "Most Valuable Player" in 1960 and 1961. PS (magazine stock), 3 3/4" X 4", n.p., n.d. Very good. Two small (ca. ½") tape stains at left edge appear in a dark area, thus aren't highly noticeable; no age toning evident. A handsome black-and-white matte-finish magazine photograph (probably "Life" magazine) showing Maris at the height of his fame, a half-length informal shot of him standing in a dugout talking to colleagues. Maris inscribes and signs "Best Wishes / Roger Maris" big and bold across his chest in blue ballpoint. Overall quite attractive -- and surprisingly scarce.

Two black and white photographs from circa 1961 of Mickey Mantle and Rogers Maris. Each are inscribed to their 1961 teammate Billy Gardner. The Mantle photograph is signed, "To Billy My Best Wishes, Mickey Mantle." The Maris photograph is signed, "To Bill, Best wishes to a hell of a nice guy, Roger Maris." Matted and framed. A nice association linking these teammates from the World Series champions. The 1961 Yankees are often mentioned as a candidate for the unofficial title of greatest baseball team in history. The 1961 Major League Baseball season was notable for the race between center fielder Mickey Mantle and right fielder Roger Maris to break Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs in a season (set in 1927). Maris eventually broke the record, hitting his 61st home run on October 1, the season's final day. During the season, Maris had seven multi-home run games; in a doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox, he hit four home runs.
