There, he fulfilled the role of secretary, recording Napoleon s conversations, which he published in Mémorial De Sainte-Hélène. Journal De La Vie Privée Et Des Conversations De L'Empereur Napoléon, À Sainte Hélène (London: 1823). In the appended letter addressed to Lord Bathurst, Las Cases demands redress for his unlawful detention at the Cape of Good Hope by the Governor Lord Charles Somerset after his expulsion from St. Helena by the Governor Sir Hudson Lowe, the seizure of his papers by British authorities upon his arrival in England, and his removal to the Continent.
