A New Picture of Rome, and Its Environs, in the Form of an Itinerary, an updated and translated edition of Marien Vasi's classic Itineraire Instructif de Rome Ancienne et Moderne, published by Samuel Leigh in 1824, with the Itineraire believed to be first published in 1792. In the publisher's full straight grain morocco boards, with the original end papers preserved. Contains all forty engraved plates of city sites by Cipriani and Parboni, including a frontispiece, as well as a folding map of major sites, and a large folding map of Rome to the rear. Collated complete. A very popular handbook citing the routes and landmarks seen across the eminent Italian city, Leigh's updated edition brings forth the charming illustrations of Cipriani and Parboni and offers a complete guide with hints on hotels and provisions needed. Leigh sold numerous travel guides across European cities across the 1820s and 30s, with this being a charming example. At the time Rome was under the control of the Papal States, later being incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy in 1870. In the publisher's full straight grain morocco boards, with the original end papers preserved. Externally, front board is loose, with rear joint strained but mostly firm. The odd rubbing mark to boards, and slight rubbing to edges. Minor loss to morocco to spine, close to joints. Knocks to head and tail of spine, and to the extremities. Marginal browning to end paper extremities. Internally, hinge between frontispiece and title leaf failed, with a loose title leaf and frontispiece and blanks attached to front board.
