Scarce. Pioneering account beautifully illustrated (after sketches by the author). Marianne Postans travelled to India in 1834, with her husband, Thomas Postans, a Captain in the 15th Regiment of the Bombay Native Infantry, where he was posted to Cutch (Kutch), the northwestern region of modern-day Gujarat. They both shared a deep interest in the people and traditions of India. Marianne's account attempts to describe the culture of the region, its bards and bardic literature (including specific songs and stories of Kutchi bards), arts and crafts, and agriculture and trade. She also describes in detail practices such as infanticide and sati. The beauty of the Rann awed her: "The distant aspect of the Runn resembles that of the ocean at ebb tide; and as some water always remains on it, the refraction of light produces the most beautiful and mysterious effects, decorating it with all the enchantments of the most lovely specimens of mirage, whose magic power, exerting itself on the morning mists, indues this desert tract with the most bewitching scenes.".

Lacking the printed title page but with the lithographed additional pictorial title and illustrated with a hand-colored map, 8 engraved plates (7 of wh…ich are hand-colored, including 1 folding), and several text engravings. In 1834, the author's husband was posted to Cutch, a western district of present-day Gujarat, India, and there she gathered the notes and made the drawings that would form the basis for this, her first publication. Fairly unobtrusive library blindstamp on frontispiece, pictorial title, map, and several text pages. Still an attractive, clean example of a scarce title in a Fine clamshell box.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, rare in the unrestored original cloth; we have traced only one such example in commerce in the last 50 years (Sotheby's, 1979). Marianne Postans (1811-1897, née Ridgway) "spoke Hindustani, and first gave an account of life in the province of Cutch and of her travels in the surrounding district, describing the peop…le, their customs and religion, and the literary and musical traditions. She was a critic of the system she found, revealing deficiencies in the British army and administration" (Theakstone). She married Thomas Postans, an officer in the Bombay Native Infantry, in 1833, and early in 1834 she accompanied him to Cutch, a remote area of western India. But her time in India was "cut short by the sudden death of her husband in 1846. She returned to England, where, on 8 July 1848, she married an army surgeon, William Henry Young" (ODNB). She travelled with him to the Crimea, writing an account of her experiences, and in 1857 published her last book, The Moslem Noble, an appeal for greater sympathy between British and Indians, which was coldly received after the Rebellion. Not in Riddick, Glimpses of India. Robinson, pp. 220-1; Theakstone, pp. 337-8. Octavo. Hand-coloured lithographic frontispiece and 6 plates (one folding), colour sketch map, additional lithographic pictorial title page, wood engravings in text. Original dark purple zigzag-grain cloth, spine lettered in gilt, boards blocked in blind, yellow coated endpapers. Pencilled number on front free endpaper. Cloth sunned, wear at spine ends and to tips, endpapers scuffed with a little skinning, faint shadow from removed bookplate on front pastedown, plates generally fresh: a very good copy.
