Price clipped to D/J. This is the first biography of Eduard Morike and full account of his works to appear in English. This is suprising in view of the esteem in which Morike is held by the discriminating. He is generally put among the half dozen greatest German lyric poets; some critics, indeed, even place him next to Goethe as a lyricist. The serious student of of Morike is able to read works in German about him, but even such readers may find this book of interest, since it is the first to attempt any analysis of Morike's highly suggestive drawings and doodlings, some of which are here reproduced. Therefore the reader with an imperfect knowledge of German, who has perhaps been attracted to Morike by reading some of his poems at school or hearing them sung to Hugo Wolf's incomparable settings, has throughout been kept in focus by the author. She has endeavoured to help out his scanty German by summarizing the contents of poems, thus avoiding an attempt to translate the untranslatable. A great number of these poems are quoted in full, on the assumption that most readers will not have Morike's works at their side for reference.
