Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. First edition of the Senate issue. Octavo, 9.25 in. x 6 in., pp. xv, [1], 320, [61] (plates). Illustrated with sixty-five plates, two fold-out maps, and one hand-colored fold-out plate. Includes "Map of the Country Upon Upper Red River Explored in 1852" (16.5 in. x 34 in.) and "Map of the Country Between the Frontiers of Arkansas and New Mexico Embracing the Section Explored in 1849, 50, 51, & 52". (27 in. x 59 in). This second map was previously detached from the book by the previous owner, for careful study, and will be sent under separate cover. The 61 plates offer full-page natural history drawings of natural scenery, reptiles, plants, spiders, etc. that the team discovered on their exploration. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Gilt title and four raised bands to spine. Rubbing to extremities; corner lightly nudged and showing. Marbled endpapers. Light age-toning and spotting throughout. Map of Upper Red River in Very Good Plus condition. Map of Frontiers of Arkansas and New Mexico in Good condition with a few extra creases and considerable tape repair to back side to protect seams and corners, and common fold/wear points. Light tanning to seams and left side of map. Sabin 44512. Howes M276. Randolph B. Marcy was the Captain of the 5th Infantry Division under the leadership of Secretary of War Jefferson Davis. "Exploration of the Red River of Louisiana, in the Year 1852" is a more detailed account of the United States army expedition briefly described in author R.B. Marcy's book "Thirty Years of Army Life on the Border." The military had tried and failed several times before to explore the Red River's uncharted waters before finally launching this successful mission. "Exploration of the Red River" reads like a diary but contains all the necessary information for a report on the expedition. Macy included descriptions of the Indians encountered, wildlife, plant life, scenery, attached waterways and lakes, and appendicies of the courses and distances charted, minerals, fossils, animals, plants, and Indian languages.

In the original publisher's blind-stamped brown cloth with gilt spine title. Early signature in ink on the top margin of the title page. Light chipping at the joints and spine ends, corners are bumped, lacking the front free endpaper, else very good with light scattered foxing. With 64 fine lithographic plates by H. Lawrence as follows: Landscapes (plates 1-12); Geological Sections (folded plate 1, plates 4-11); Palaeontology (plates 1-6); Zoology (plates 1-18); Botany (plates 1-17,19-20). A nice copy, with the plates in very good condition. *Howes* M276.
Washington, DC, A. O. P. Nicholson, 1854. 8vo (22.1 x 14.5 cm). xv, 286 pp., 63 nice lithographed plates (several tinted) of plants, animals (ten on snakes and amphibians), mammals, insects landscape views and one folded hand-coloured geological profile. Original blind-stamped brown cloth. Gilt title on the spine. = Rare early exploration on natural history and geology of this part of the southern US, including the early (may be first?) geological profile. This is the later House of Representatives edition. It includes nice views of the Gypsum Bluffs on Red River, Granite Boulders and the Ke-Che-Ah-Que-Ho-No of the Red River and 19 fine plates of plants (numbered I-XVII, XIX-XX; XVIII not published). Also included are the appendices on meteorology, geology (plate II not issued), palaeontology, fishes, shells, arachnides and botany by John Torrey. By far the most important section is Appendix F, Reptiles, by S. F. Baird and C. Girard. It contains the descriptions and illustrations of many new snakes, as well as other reptiles and amphibians. Girard also wrote the parts on Orthoptera, Myriapods, and arachnids, all with new species (illustrated). This should come with a separate portfolio with two maps, but it is absent as in most copies. Appendix H is a trilingual dictionnary English - Comanche - Witchita. Some foxing in the text and on some plates but mostly in the margins - the herpetological plates nearly clean. Sabin, 44512.

17, [1]pp. 8vo. 17, [1]pp. 8vo. Mary Amelia Mann Marcy (1812-1878) was the wife of Randolph B. Marcy (1812-1887), the U.S. Army officer and western explorer. The present privately-printed memorial on her life seems to have been written by her son-in-law, George B. McClellan (1826-1885) [see. p. 3]. The work comprises a biography of her life, including "her long experience of remote frontier existence" at Forts Howard and Winnebago, Wisconsin, Fort Gratior, Michigan and Forts Towson and Wachita, Oklahoma. The author notes: "I have given this brief sketch of the experience of Mrs. Marcy on the frontier for the purpose of emphasizing a remarkable trait in her character, and that is, that notwithstanding the rough life she had so long led, she preserved intact that remarkable delicacy and refinement with which nature had gifted her" (p. 11). Scarce, printed-privately for family and friends, OCLC locates five copies (Rochester Public, Autry Museum, Princeton, Wisconsin Historical, and Columbia). Publisher's brown cloth, upper cover lettered in silver, worn.
