In realtà è opportuno restituire a questa figura di sovrano tutto il suo spessore, a cominciare da una chiara volontà di riformare alcuni aspetti di criticità della realtà imperiale tardo-antica, come la fiscalità e l¿autonomia cittadina. Giuliano avversò decisamente la figura di Costantino, ma non solo per la sua conversione al cristianesimo. Egli ne contestò infatti il modo in cui resse l¿Impero nella sua globalità al punto da rendere ammissibile sostenere (Santo Mazzarino) che la storia del IV secolo può essere interpretata alla luce di queste due figure ¿epocali¿. In realtà il progetto di governo di Giuliano era ambizioso e di ampio respiro, e ne giustifica la riscoperta, soprattutto in età umanistica e illuministica, che ha esiti significativi che giungono sino ai nostri giorni.
