Si tratta dell'indagine su un corpus quello girato dai Lumière e dai loro operatori, che costituisce una vasta e originale documentazione visiva della forma urbana sul finire del XIX secolo. Attraverso l'analisi di questi antichi brevi film della storia del cinema, il testo affronta alcuni dei più fecondi filoni della ricerca contemporanea: i tratti specifici delle origini, il problema dello "sguardo ingenuo" e della non-fiction, l'immaginario come oggetto di studi interdisciplinari, la definizione di prospettive storiografiche a cavallo fra archeologia e teleologia. Coniugando orizzonti complementari, la ricerca attraversa il sistema di interazioni tra consolidate rappresentazioni della città e forme proprie del nuovo dispositivo. Il percorso vedutista nel precinema precisa modelli di rappresentazione della forma urbis sui quali la veduta Lumière si innesta e dai quali, al tempo stesso, si differenzia. All'arrivo del Cinématographe, la meraviglia del movimento consente inusitati effetti di realtà ma non consuma la memoria di preesistenti repertori iconografici. La città, struttura globalizzante della cultura europea, emerge dunque quale soggetto principe del "vedere con apparecchio", un vedere che espanso o in rilievo, proiettato o in movimento contribuisce a edificare medesimi immaginari urbani e comuni architetture mentali. Nel passaggio dall'idea di veduta a quella di film sta la genesi di una forma artistica prettamente cinematografica, in grado di esprimere pienamente il cambiamento subito dalle città, la trasformazione epocale seguente l'abbattimento delle antiche mura, la capitolazione di secolari appartenenze (custodite nell'idea di civitas), innanzi allo sguardo onnipolitano del nuovo abitante-spettatore cinematografico del XX secolo. - Marco Bertozzi è nato a Bologna e si è laureato a Firenze, in Architettura, nel 1989. Dottore di ricerca in Storia e filologia del cinema, documentarista, ha pubblicato saggi sulle relazioni fra cinema e architettura in Fellini, Kubrick, Lumière, Hitchcock, Ragghianti.
