Petit manque de papier sur premier contreplat, première page d'avis au lecteur coupé plus courte sur la partie inférieure. Vendu en l'état Premier catalogue de vente aux enchères connu imprimé en France. Il s'agit du catalogue de la bibliothèque Bidot, famille de notables et bibliophiles de Rouen qui possédait une des plus grandes collections privées de France. Avec plus de 16.000 ouvrages, dont nombreux manuscrits qui furent achetés par la Bibliothèque du Roy et qui se trouvent aujourd'hui à la Bibliothèque Nationale, cet imposant ensemble fut vendu par les héritiers de Louis-Emeric Bigot, grand érudit et bibliophile du XVIIème siècle. Les trois libraires qui éditèrent cet ouvrage se portèrent acheteurs et dispersèrent ensuite les livres aux enchères. Le catalogue fut rédigé par le libraire Prosper Marchand et regroupe les ouvrages en cinq grands thèmes : droit, théologie, histoire, belles-lettres et philosophie ; Cette organisation aura une grande influence sur la classification des livres lors la rédaction des bibliographies comme le Brunet et des catalogues de vente jusqu'à nos jours. In den Warenkorb2 parts in 1 volume. First edition of a biographical dictionary by the French bookseller, editor and bibliographer Prosper Marchand (1678-1756), an exile living in the Netherlands. It contains short biographies of numerous well-known figures, including Catherine de Medici, Robert Estienne, Cyranides, Lawrence Torrentinus, and ma…ny more. Marchand mentions their publications and often includes fragments, short texts and/or poems by them. Since he was an important figure in the literary and intellectual circles of his day, his biographies of contemporaries often include unusual anecdotes about their lives.Marchand was banished from France because of his religion, and started selling books in The Hague. He later became editor of the Journal littéraire, one of the better critical periodicals of the time. The present work was posthumously published by Marchand's friend Jean Nicolas Allamand Samuel.The book was bound for the Dutch minister Jacques Renaud Bouillier (1737-1798) in the 1780's, probably by the so-called Crevenna Bindery in Amsterdam. The coat-of-arms in the first compartment is most probably Bouillier's and at least one of rolls (r-XII) was used in the Crevenna bindery. In 1762 Bouillier was called to London as minister of the Walloon congregation, and he did not return to the Netherlands until 1779, when he once again set up as a clergyman in Amsterdam. His library was auctioned in Amsterdam in 1800.With an armorial bookplate on paste-down. The "advertissement de l'editeur" to part II is bound in part I and pages 259-262 are misbound. Rare réunion de l'édition originale du livre de Prosper Marchand, et de la seconde édition de son Supplément publié seulement en 1772, et dû à l'abbé Barthélémy Mercier de Saint-Léger. Le volume de l'Histoire de l'origine et des premiers progrès de l'imprimerie est divisé en deux parties. La première débute par un beau frontispice allégorique gravé par Jakob von Schley : on y voit l'Imprimerie descendant des cieux, accordée par Minerve et Mercure à l'Allemagne, qui la présente à la Hollande, l'Angleterre, l'Italie et la France ; la deuxième partie possède sa page de titre propre, intitulée : Histoire de l'imprimerie ; seconde partie, contenant diverses pièces importantes pour la confirmation de la première. Ces deux ouvrages forment les premières tentatives sérieuses de comprendre le milieu et les conditions de l'apparition de l'art typographique.Bigmore & Wyman précisent, à propos du premier volume, "This work is, from an historical, literary, and typographic point of view, of high interest". On trouve rarement le Supplément à l'histoire de l'imprimerie, par Mercier de Saint-Léger, associé au livre de Marchand ("This work, in its original form, as issued in 1773, is not very often met with, and its improved and extended shape, dated 1775, is nom very rare, yet it really forms, if not an integral part, an indispensable sequel to Prosper Marchand's celebrated History. It was compiled in the most conscientious manner, the author having undertaken a variety of journeys to inspect personally the monuments describes and to revise the documents quoted by his predecessors" B. & W.). Les "Lettres de M. Mercier, abbé de St. Léger de Soissons, à MM. les auteurs du Journal des Sçavans, contenant diverses remarques critiques sur son Supplément à l'Histoire de l'Imprimerie de P. Marchand" [Paris, 1776], reliées à la fin du deuxième volume, sont encore plus rares : "This tract, bound up with a copy of the "Supplément" in our possession, is exceedingly rare" (B. & W.). Bel exemplaire, finement relié par Jean-Claude Bozérian. 1740.

Designed as a supplement to Bayle's Dictionnaire historique. "Prosper Marchand was a bookseller and an editor, to whom the literary world is greatly indebted . He died in 1756, and left his library and manuscripts to the University of Leyden. He wrote, among other works Le Dictionaire historique . the original manuscript of which 'was all written on little pieces of paper of different sizes, some not bigger than one's thumb-nail, and written in a character so exceedingly small that it was not legible to the naked eye. It has been said that this is the first book printed with the help of a microscope' (Watt). It is, however, a work full of erudition although the style is characterized as not being very pure" (Bigmore & Wyman II, p. 23). The catalogue of books offered by De Hondt at the back of the first volume is an impressive 12-column affair listing approximately 200 titles in French and Latin.

Marchand writes that he produced the book "a la sollici…tation de quelques amis qui ont cru que le troisième jubile ou la troisième année séculaire, de l'imprimerie, reveilleroit infailliblement la curiosité du publique touchant l'origine de ce bel art [at the request of some friends who believed that the third jubilee, or the tercentenary of printing, would infallibly wake the public curiosity concerning the origin of this beautiful art]." The allegorical frontspiece by J.V. Schley show Minerva and Mercury, descending from Heaven, granting the gift of printing to Germany who in turn gives it to England, Holland, France, and Italy.
