Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. HAITI CANAPE-VERT BY BROTHERS MARCELIN TRANSLATED BY E. LAROCQUE TINKER 1944. This book opens with a brief section titled: Haitian Background, written by the translator, which recalls among other things that the country was the first Black Republic on the American Continent…founded in 1804, and that a regiment of Haitian Chasseurs, fought on the side of the colonists during our Revolutionary war. This tale of Haiti, by the Brothers Philippe Thoby-Marcelin and Pierre Marcelin, is titled: Canape-Vert. It was translated by Edward Larocque Tinker who, in addition to his role in writing the background piece, designed and decorated the book. This small hard cover book (5 ¾ x 8 ¼ inches, 225 pages) was published by Farrar & Rinehart of New York and Toronto, dated 1944, a First Edition according to my research. There is a brightly colored frontispiece, again by Tinker, and an opening list of the Cast, in lieu of a Table of Content. It is worth noting that this book was the Prize Winning Novel in the Second Latin American Contest. The book is bound in patterned cloth with titles on the spine; the endpapers are also decorated with a Haitian scene like pattern. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are perhaps a bit dust dulled but generally clean with some darkening along the edges. The hard covers are a bit sprung, barely perceptible and doubtless correctable. Inside, there is a rather formal book plate cum coat of arms of a former owner on the half-title. This is the only mark in the book; the interior pages have a slight age-toned cast to their outer edge but are otherwise clean and bright. Both hinges are fully intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
