Hardcover. Zustand: g+. First edition. Folio. 239, [1]pp. Original illustrated dust-jacket over gilt-stamped blue cloth, with gold lettering on spine. Decorative endpapers. Fly leaf inscribed and signed by author and editor Louise W. Mackie. Color frontispiece. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in tribal art or Oriental carpets. Written by 7 international experts on the Turkmen and their carpets, "Turkmen: Tribal Carpets and Traditions" is the most comprehensive publication on the subject. The carpets were made by nomadic tribes in Central Asia to decorate their camels and tents, and to serve utilitarian functions. Bags for storing dry goods were hung in tents and packed on animals during seasonal migrations. In Turkmen society, carpet weavings were the most prized possessions; in the West, they are the most admired of all Oriental carpets. In this volume, 95 Turkmen carpets, selected for their quality and beauty, are illustrated in magnificent color, most for the first time. The pieces were chosen from the impressive resources in the Textile Museum and from 35 other American collections. There are also 117 b/w illustrations, including scenes of daily Turkmen life and rug weaving. Over 55 stunning drawings of motifs in Turkmen carpets accompany the text and elucidate tribal characteristics. Dust-jacket creased, with closed tears along edges. Moderate shelf wear along edges of binding. Previous owner's stamp on fly leaf (Dr. & Mrs. Fred Krieger). Dust-jacket in overall fair, binding in good, interior in very good condition.
