Therefore, the aim of this short corpus study is to investigate the usage of idioms in the language of nonnative English speakers, especially in the language production of German English secondlanguage learners ('ESL-Students'). It is argued that ESL-Students in Germany do not use idiomatic language in their production of English, mainly due to the circumstance that idioms are not explicitly taught in the English foreign language classroom (EFL-classroom) and because the language input in German English teaching classes is too artificial to pick them up unintentionally. The first part of this paper will contain a definition of what idioms and idiomatic language are and shortly address the processes of idiom processing, comprehension and acquisition. A second part will contain a corpus study that will shortly examine the usage of idioms by ESL-Students in contrast to the idiom usage of native speakers in quantitative as well as in qualitative terms. The two corpora used will be the ICLE-German ('ICLE-GE') and the LOCNESS corpus. The list of idioms that the corpora are examined for is taken from English second language teaching textbooks currently used in German English classes. The final part of this paper will discuss the question whether the teaching of idioms in German ESL-classrooms is successful (correct and rich usage of idioms by ESL-Students, almost native proficiency) or not (idiom usage in ESL-Students incorrect or low) and make suggestions for effective idiom teaching in the EFL-classroom.

Das Gymnasium hat einen groß angelegten Musikzweig, was die Schule besonders für Musiklehrer attraktiv macht und mir bereits vor Beginn des Praktikums bekannt war.Meine hauptsächliche Herausforderung im Schulpraktikum sah ich darin, die Lehrerrolle so auszufüllen, dass es mir gelingen würde, 'die Schüler in einem für mich akzeptablen Rahmen des Verhaltens' zu halten (Klassenführung) und so eine Unterrichtsatmosphäre zu schaffen, die ein Erreichen der für die Unterrichtsstunde gesteckten Lernziele ermöglichte. Diese Schwerpunktsetzung mag unter anderem darauf beruhen, dass ich selbst in meiner Schulzeit Teil einer sehr 'problematischen' Klasse war, in der ein zielgerichtetes Unterrichten durch Störungen über lange Strecken gar nicht oder nur in sehr begrenztem Maße möglich war.Dennoch habe ich die Erfahrung gemacht, dass bestimmte Lehrpersonen durch ihr Auftreten und ihre Methodenwahl die Möglichkeit hatten, auch diese sehr unruhige und unkonzentrierte Klasse in einem befriedigenden Maße zu unterrichten, was andererseits offenbar auch eine weniger stressreiche Unterrichtssituation für die Lehrkraft selbst bedeutete. Ich wollte daher versuchen, spezifische Methoden der Klassenführung praktisch einzusetzten, um bereits bei meinen ersten Unterrichtsversuchen ein solches Lehrerverhalten an den Tag zu legen und somit eine gute Steuerung und Disziplinierung der Klasse zu erreichen.Entsprechend soll der Aspekt der 'Klassenführung' im Unterricht, besonders in Hinblick auf Lehrerverhalten, Disziplinierungsmaßnahmen und störungsfreien Unterrichtsverlauf, einen Schwerpunkt der Beobachtung und Reflexion in diesem Bericht bilden.Die kritische Beobachtung meines Lehrerverhaltens und meiner Klassenführung wird, auch in Bezug zu den oben genannten Leitfragen Ewald Kiels zum Schulpraktikum, hauptsächlich unter Punkt 5. und Punkt 6. dieses Berichtes ('Erfahrungen und Reflexion des Lehrerverhaltens', 'Reflexion der Lernentwicklung der Schüler im Praktikumszeitraum') Berücksichtigung finden.
