Kl.-4°. 12 Bll. Br. Nicht bei VD 17. Krivatsy 7405.- Markus Mappus (auch Marc Mapp.- Straßburg 1632 - 1701) war ein elsässischer Arzt und Hochschullehrer. Er studierte zunächst an der Universität Straßburg, dann an der Universität Padua Medizin. Nach seiner Rückkehr aus Padua wurde er zunächst 1653 zum Dr. med. promoviert. Anschließend habilitierte er sich dort als praktischer Arzt. Er wurde in Straßburg ordentlicher Professor der Botanik und später auf den Lehrstuhl der praktischen Medizin berufen. Zudem wurde er zum Kanoniker an der Thomaskirche in Straßburg ernannt. Er galt als eifriger Vertreter der alten griechischen Heilkunde, insbesondere der Lehren von Hippokrates von Kos und Galenos.- Papier stark gebräunt und braunfleckig.

First edition of the most important 18th-century work on the flora of the Alsace, in the northeast of France. It is a beautifully printed catalogue of the plants in the region, in alphabetical order, complete with seven highly detailed copper-engraved folding plates. Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) has quoted it in his own work and was known to own a copy of it.Although the work is pre-Linnaean, it is still of interest as a record of the plants that existed in the Alsace in the late 18th century, as it describes each plant in great detail. The text contains many interesting facts on the distribution, folklore, medicinal and practical use of these plants and gives their names in French, German and Latin. Most of the engraved plates are signed by German engravers Johann Striedbeck (1666-1714), A. D. Danneker (dates unknown), who can be found in Thieme/Becker under Dannegger, and I. M. Weis (dates unknown).With an ownership annotation at the verso of the first flyleaf ("phifig. . . A. Bot. n°. 395. Wetlauw."). The joints are slightly weakened. The editor's preface has been mis-bound at the end of the work, in the index. The leaves are somewhat browned throughout, with some leaves more affected than others, missing the two final blank leaves. L'ouvrage de Marc Mappus (1666-1736) fut publié de manière posthume par Jean Chrétien Ehrmann : Mappus lui avait légué par testament sa bibliothèque, son herbier et ses notes arrêtées à la lettre E, à la condition qu'Hermann publie son "Historia plantarum alsaticarum", qu'il n'avait pas eu le temps de terminer. L'ouvrage recense les espèces régionales connues, dont 2 bonnes douzaines relevées pour la première fois, classées par ordre alphabétique, avec description, éventuels usages thérapeutiques et culinaires, en latin, donnant des localisations précises en allemand, ainsi que les dénominations populaires en allemand et en français. Un index latin, un autre teutsch et un index gallicus, c?est-à-dire français, faits par Jacques Reinbold Spielmann, terminent l?ouvrage. Minime reliquat d'ex-libris au timbre humide (en grande partie effacé) sur la page de titre, petite cerne d'humidité en pied des 50 derniers feuillets, quelques rousseurs, mais bel exemplaire. 1742.
