(the map-sheet)) In 1820, the islands were named the Gilbert Islands or îles Gilbert (in French). Duperrey was the first to put together on a map the whole Gilbert Islands archipelago with the name given to it by Admiral Krusenstern after the British Captain Thomas Gilbert, who crossed the archipelago in 1788. Duperrey commanded La Coquille on its circumnavigation of the earth (1822-1825).
