Gorgeous gilt decoration and titles on each spine. Marbled endpapers coupled with gilt edging on all papers. Five really nice large, heavy books that are full of fascinating information on the history of Surrey. All five books are well used, a tad worn, corners slightly bumped and worn, a few odd brown spotting marks, but overall considering the books are 175 years old, they are all in nice clean condition. Preface by the author Edward Wedlake Brayley dated April 10th, 1848. Volume One: has 495 pages. Volume Two: has 486 pages. Volume Three: has 527 pages, Volume Four: has 519 pages, Volume Five: has 442 pages plus an additional 96 appendix pages. All bindings are nice and tight, all pages intact and all pages, text, maps, stunning illustrations, wood and steel engravings are all in nice, clean, readable order. Please note these five volumes are large and heavy books and therefore postage/shipping may increase from listed price depending on final destination. This is a remarkable collection of five books that must have taken a serious amount of work to collate. These five amazing volumes deserve to be preserved for future generations, they would grace any stylish library, and would takes hours and hours to read and absorb the fascinating History of Surrey in the nineteenth century and before.…

Thirty platinum print photographs, each approximately 280 x 365mm (except first print, after an engraving 72 x 112mm), approximately half vignetted, mounted on rectos of 30 ll.thick card, each titled and one dated 'June 17th 1880' in red ink on mount, verso of final leaf damp-stained (not affecting print), all edges gilt; bound in brown morocco with gilt and blind decoration and lettering on boards, metal studs to lower board, metal clasp attachment on upper board only (lacking lower attachment and clasp); some rubbing to boards but overall very good.A magnificent album of large-format views of North Wales and Chester, likely produced in celebration of the new harbour and hotel at Holyhead, which was opened by Edward, Prince of Wales in June 1880 a group portrait of the event is depicted here. Our attribution is based on a comparison with another platinum print, acquired from a separate source, showing the River Conway and printed in the same format and process which has the pencil credit to the photographer along with his processing details on the verso. The print process is there described as cold-bath platinum. Mantell was the Honorary Secretary of the Photographic Society of Great Britain in 1892. In this album he has captured manmade architectural achievements alongside the natural splendour of North Wales in celebration of Holyhead's recent renovations and its future as an important port. In particular the bridges, viaducts and waterways of the region are represented, as well as three views of Chester including the Roodee racecourse. Sole edition, 4to, (ii, 201)-216 pp. Wood engraving to the title page, some light foxing, small marginal tear to the penultimate leaf. Inscribed on a front blank from the author to the antiquarian Sir Thomas Mantell, with the latter's booklabel to the paste down. Small blind stamp to the title page, piece torn from the top edge of the final blank. Contemporary dark green half calf, gilt decorated spine, a little wear to extremities. Sir Thomas Mantell, 1751-1831, antiquarian and Mayor of Dover. Only a very distant relative of the author's, if at all, they clearly struck up a friendship towards the end of Sir Thomas' life, with Gideon's journal recording a visit to Kent and after his death accompanying Lady Mantell to see the giraffes in the Surrey Zoological Gardens. Dean 69, noting how the work was omitted from Mantell's "Fossils of the South Downs" (1822) due to length restrictions. Originally published as part of the Geological Transactions and scarce in this form with none noted in commerce. OCLC lists 12 copies but only two in this country - Natural History Museum and University of Leicester. …
