Soft cover. Zustand: Fair-Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Vol1, # 1, January 1953, of a sci-fi digest. Original stories, not reprints, from Arthur C Clarke (The Forgotten Enemy), John Jukes (Checkmate Morning), and others. Roughness along the page ends and the fore edge of the front cover- probably due to insects. More significa…nt loss along the bottom edge of the front cover. The spine, back cover & interior are in good shape. Small loss at the top & bottom of the spine & wear at the edge. The book actually presents reasonably well. A fair to good copy. Leo Manso, front cover (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Very Good dj. First Edition. [light shelfwear to book, front endpaper is corner-clipped; the jacket is a little edgeworn, with a short closed tear and associated diagonal crease at top left corner of front panel, old internal tape-repair at top of spine, a couple of tiny nicks at edges of rear pan…el]. Novel about a female patient at a state mental hospital. The author, per the jacket blurb, was "one of the country's leading psychiatric nurses," and at the time of the book's publication was Director of Nursing Education at the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury, Vermont (which had previously been known as the Vermont State Asylum for the Insane). In her Preface to the book (her first novel), she writes: "I believe in compassionate love as the healing balm for the gaping emotional wounds which have broken our mental patients. I believe in this over and above the 'mechanical' psychiatric treatments as we know them. Thus I write of Laurie -- her illness, her experience with life, and her response to a warm and meaningful series of relationships.". Illustrated by (dj design) Leo Manso (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Reprint. (no dust jacket) [a good sound copy, nice and clean with just a little wear at the extremities, slight scrunching to top edges of several pages in the middle of the book]. A novel of "love, intrigue, horror, and murder," the story of "a brilliant and ruthless woman, [a] governess whose ch…arm and diabolic cleverness brought destruction in their wake." Reprint of the first novel published by this prolific author under her "Joseph Shearing" pseudonym; it originally appeared in England in 1932 under the title "Forget-Me-Not," and was published in America the same year by Harper & Brothers as "Lucile Cléry: A Woman of Intrigue." (Note that the book itself bears no date other than the 1932 copyright notice, which causes most booksellers to mis-identify this printing as the first American edition. Unfortunately, the clues to the 1941 printing are present only on the dust jacket, which is NOT present on this particular copy.). Illustrated by (dj design) Leo Manso (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Good+ dj. 4th printing. (price-clipped) [good sound copy with only minor shelfwear, the 5th of the book's 8 signatures (i.e. pp. 141-172) printed on cheaper paper and thus notably age-toned, one-time owner's signature on front endpaper, vintage bookseller's label (Paul Elder & Co., San Francisco) o…n rear pastedown; the jacket is worn at edges and extremities, with a small bit of surface insect-nibbling near the bottom of the rear panel]. The author's first novel, a psychological horror tale set in a small town on Cape Cod, about a young woman (the book's narrator) who enters into a loveless marriage to escape her abusive father (who rapes her at the age of 14), only to be subsequently abandoned and divorced by her husband. She becomes something of a recluse, until coaxed out of her isolation by a local groceryman, with whom she enjoys a budding romance -- until her ex-husband returns to town with a new (pregnant) wife, and moves in next door to her. Then, in the words of one contemporary review: "Obsessed by envy and rivalry, by her own inadequacies, the advent of Ed's baby adds the final touch to her brooding, bitter unhappiness and ---." (Sorry, I've already given you enough spoilers. No more!) One contemporary reviewer described the book thus: "Crackling with suspense, a story filled with emotional anguish and fearsome passion, [the novel] is a triumph for the author. Eerie and gruesome, yet haunting and deeply sincere, it achieves heroic stature because it creates an impression unforgettable." It was also announced shortly after its publication that the movie rights to the book had been acquired by agent-turned-producer Charles K. Feldman, but no film was ever made. However, Wolfson (already an established playwright when this book appeared) later dramatized it himself under the title "American Gothic"; it was staged at the Circle in the Square theatre in Greenwich Village in 1953, starring Clarice Blackburn and the then-unknown Jason Robards Jr., under the direction of Jose Quintero -- who later gave Robards his big break in his 1956 production of O'Neill's "Long Day's Journey Into Night.". Illustrated by (dj) Leo Manso (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. Publication: New York, The Macmillan Company, 1956 Formatting: 8vo, pp. 191. Condition Report: Very Good. Binding remains tight and secure, though the spine exhibits a very slight forward lean and minor crushing to the head and tail. The light bl…ue cloth boards are generally clean and bright with crisp dark stamping, showing only trace rubbing to the corners. The text block edges display light age-toning and a degree of dust-dulling and subtle foxing, though the interior pages remain entirely clean, crisp, and free of notable blemishes. The original dust jacket presents handsomely but bears mild edgewear, including shallow rubbing and very minor nicks to the extremities, alongside general surface toning to the rear panel. Notably, the verso of the dust jacket reveals distinct vertical bands of acidic tanning, which does not heavily penetrate the front artwork but remains an observable flaw upon inspection. Catalogue Note: First edition. This title was issued under Macmillan's recognisable "Cock Robin Mystery" imprint, a highly regarded series that championed a vast and diverse catalogue of post-war crime fiction. The striking, moody dust jacket design, executed by the prolific American artist and collagist Leo Manso, features a haunting juxtaposition of a spectral skull overlooking a silhouetted steam yacht, perfectly encapsulating the era's pulp-adjacent aesthetic. The title marks Vandercook's long-awaited return to the mystery genre after a decades-long hiatus from fiction, bringing back his established investigative protagonists. Finding examples with an intact, unclipped dust jacket that retains its dark, vibrant frontal coloration without severe paper loss remains a desirable point for collectors of vintage mid-century crime and thriller fiction. Following a twenty-year hiatus from the mystery genre, renowned news commentator and author John W. Vandercook resurrects his razor-sharp detective duo, Bertram Lynch and Robert Deane. This time, the intrepid pair finds themselves aboard the Vittoria, a luxury super-yacht cruising the sun-drenched but treacherous waters off the coast of Haiti. Tasked by the enigmatic and ruthless tycoon Viggo Sand to recover millions in stolen pirate loot, Lynch and Deane must navigate a claustrophobic galley of desperate passengers and greedy shipmates. As tensions boil and the yacht drops anchor in a secluded cove, the sudden and violent demise of one of the guests plunges the voyage into a perilous game of cat and mouse, testing the detectives' limits in an atmospheric tale of greed, deception, and murder. Leo Manso (Dust Jacket) (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Very Good dj. First Edition. [modest shelfwear, slight deterioration to cloth at ends of spine; the jacket is a bit edgeworn, with a slightly ragged closed tear and associated creasing at the top of the front panel, another short closed tear at the top of the rear panel, and some fading to the spin…e]. SIGNED and DATED by the author on the ffep, with an additional gift inscription in another hand. "Sol Kenner, the immigrant boy from Pedayetz, Galicia, has been in America for nearly four years and is now holding down a job during the day, going to high school at night and keeping company with an American girl." His job, in an upholstery shop, gets him involved in labor union matters, and he finds the relative sophistication of his 17-year-old girlfriend a bit bewildering, as does his old-fashioned Talmud-studying father. (Galicia, in case you're wondering, is a region spanning present-day southeastern Poland and western Ukraine.) ***This book is among the nearly 150 items offered in ReadInk's new Catalog Number 4, "Booking Passage: Books on the Immigrant Experience." Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Very Good+ dj. First Edition. [nice clean book, minimal wear to spine ends, a couple of tiny spots on top edge of text block; jacket lightly edgeworn (see notes)] (B&W photographs) A major theoretical work by the outspoken Hollywood Ten screenwriter, who apparently had a lot of time on his hands to… think about such matters; a little prison time and some blacklisting will do that for you. The book is described in the jacket blurb as "the first serious attempt by an American writer to develop an aesthetic of the film, [combining] intimate practical experience in Hollywood with an understanding of avant-garde theory and trends." Very uncommon in such nice condition. [NOTE that although the book itself appears to be the American first edition, the jacket looks like it was prepared specifically for British distribution, with a "42s" printed price on the front flap and advertisements for other books available from Trans Atlantic Book Service, Ltd., London on the rear panel.]. Wynd's scarce second novel, set during the 3-1/2-year Japanese occupation of Singapore during World War II (1942-1945), a time when the city was "teeming with people of all races [and was] tense with conflicts between Japanese conquerors and humiliated former rulers." The narrative, focusing on four Eurasian characters, "probes searchingly into the age-old conflicts, the psychological problems and humiliations that confront persons of mixed blood at every turn." The author himself had been captured by the Japanese while serving with the British Army in Malaya, and spent much of the war in a POW camp. Illustrated by (dj design) [Leo] Manso (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. First American Edition. (lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a professionally-made facsimile reproduction of same; see 2nd image posted with this listing) [a nice clean book, with just a touch of shelfwear to the bottom edges, slight darkening of spine cloth, minor bumping to the upper… corners, and some discoloration in the gutters]. Greene's novel, set in Mexico in the late 1920s, about a Catholic priest who becomes a fugitive from the authorities during the period in which the government had decreed a strict enforcement of an article in the country's 1917 constitution that sought to limit the power of the Catholic Church, and which led to an uprising in central and western Mexico. The book was published the same month (March 1940) in England, under the title "The Power and the Glory," and was later adapted into the 1947 film THE FUGITIVE, directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda. This is the uncommon first state of the first American printing, with pages 165 and 256 mistakenly transposed; most copies were recalled and corrected after the book's initial release. (The error no doubt was due in part to the fact that both pages are headed "Chapter Three" (which is not in itself an error, since the book is divided into four sections, the first three of which each have their own "Chapter Three") and to the additional fact that they begin almost identically: page 165 (which should be 256) with "A voice said:" and page 256 (which should be 165) with "A voice near his foot said:".) NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing.
