Index. Grape cultivation is one of the most lucrative farming in India. It is grown in Maharashtra Karnataka Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. India produces approximately 9 lakh tonnes of fresh grape annually from an area of 34 000 ha. In the world scenario of grape experts India's share about 12 000 tonnes per year accounting for 1.33 per cent of the total production. Grapes are grown in tropical regions of India and research goes on National Research Center Pune and Indian Institute of Horticulture Research Bangalore. India has the distinction of grape harvesting at such a time when no grapes are harvested any where in the world by virtue of double pruning. In Northern Karnataka there is scope of cultivating wine varieties along with table varieties and resins as prices of resin decline day by day. There is immense opportunity to produce export quality grape off season cropping was tried in Northern Karnataka especially Bijapur but harvesting coincides with the September rains.
