In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Very Good+ dj. Reprint (1st printing thus). [a good sound copy, nicer than often seen with these cheaply-produced editions, with a typical but not severe amount of age-tanning to the pages, a touch of wear to the spine ends, one-time owner's name plus date & place of purchase in ink on the front e…ndpaper, small ink check-marks next to several titles in the table of contents; the jacket is lightly edgeworn, and the lower rear flap is rather heavily corner-clipped]. The second published collection of Ellery Queen short stories, all of which had previously appeared in various magazines during the 1930s. The short novel, "The Lamp of God," is presented first, and the remaining eight stories are arranged in two groups: "New Adventures" (consisting of "The Adventure of:" "The Treasure Hunt"; "The Hollow Dragon"; "The House of Darkness"; "The Bleeding Portrait"); and "A Unique Group of Ellery Queen Sports Mysteries." The latter group contained these stories, with their theme sports noted: "Man Bites Dog" (baseball); "Long Shot" (horse racing); "Mind Over Matter" (boxing); "Trojan Horse" (football). Originally published by Frederick A. Stokes Company in 1940. Illustrated by (dj) Arthur Hawkins Jr. (illustrator).

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Very Good dj. Reprint. [a good sound copy, tiny fraying and very slight exposure of boards at lower tips but no other significant wear, bookplate on front pastedown, one-time owner's name plus date & place of purchase and brief comment (all in ink) at top of front endpaper, small ink check-mark nex…t to each title in the table of contents; the jacket has some wear along the top and bottom edges, with shallow chipping along top edge (mostly at top of spine), light scuffing/soiling, one small closed tear and associated short crease at bottom right corner of front panel]. The first "Ellery Queen" book that wasn't a novel, originally published by Frederick A. Stokes in 1934. The contents, "a veritable banquet of thrills for all lovers of Problems in Deduction" (a reference to the subtitle on all of EQ's early mystery novels), were stories that had appeared in various magazines (some under different titles than here) during 1933 and 1934. The tales, all of which had "The Adventure of" prepended to their titles for purposes of this collection (probably a conscious nod to the original Sherlock Holmes stories, which employed the same titling practice), are: "The African Traveler"; "The Hanging Acrobat"; "The One-Penny Black"; "The Bearded Lady"; "The Three Lame Men"; "The Invisible Lover"; "The Teakwood Case"; "'The Two-Headed Dog'"; "The Glass-Domed Clock"; "The Seven Black Cats"; and "The Mad Tea-Party." A feature carried over from a number of the early novels was the book's Preface by the mysterious "J.J. McC.," a friend of the Queens, who here relates conversations he had with both Ellery and his father Richard, on the topic of his being asked to write this very foreword! It's interesting to note that for this edition, G&D employed the same "silhouetted crook with a gun" jacket art that they had used for a couple of Raoul Whitfield novels in the early 1930s.

[no significant wear, essentially as-new but with a previous owner's initials plus date & place of purchase written in ink along the edge of the inside rear cover; NOTE that this book was acquired with a plastic cover protector, which I have left in place but which ca…n be easily removed if desired]. Trade PB (B&W photo frontispiece) Fourteen "ingeniously plotted" radio scripts for the mystery program "The Adventures of Ellery Queen," which ran from 1939 to 1948. These scripts, however, are all from the 1939-1945 period, when both the authors -- cousins from Brooklyn, who by that time had built up the "Ellery Queen" name to be almost synonymous with mystery fiction, through novels, short stories, and Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, which launched in 1941 -- were still collaborating on the radio show. (After 1945, Anthony Boucher took Dannay's place in the radio writing.). Illustrated by (cover design) Deborah Miller (illustrator).

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. No Dust Jacket. Reprint (stated 6th printing). (lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a professionally-made facsimile reproduction of the first edition jacket; see 2nd image posted with this listing) [a nice-looking copy with only light shelfwear, faint age-toning to edges of text block…, one-time owner's name plus date & place of purchase and brief comment written in ink on front endpaper]. The first mystery novel by "Queen," which also marked the debut of the authorial team's eponymous protagonist, a writer and bibliophile, who was forever being enlisted to assist his father, Inspector Richard Queen, in the solving of some baffling crime -- in this instance, the murder of a sleazy lawyer in the audience during a theatrical performance. Barzun and Taylor, in "A Catalogue of Crime," pronounce this book "a landmark rather than a cornerstone, perhaps," and are somewhat disdainful of the father-son duo's "immense thoroughness and almost fatiguing pertinacity" as well as their "egregious bonhomie," while still allowing as how "the neatness of the plot involving a missing hat in a theater murder cannot be denied." Per the jacket blurb, the book had been "chosen from more than 100 selected manuscripts to represent the [original publisher's] contribution to the mysterio-detective literature of 1929," and by any measure it was an auspicious debut -- and for once justified an enthusiastic jacket-blurb writer's declaration that "Ellery Queen bids fair to join that immortal group to which Sherlock Holmes, Lupin and few others belong." Indeed Ellery Queen did become a household name -- even if it was not so much due to the quality of the authors' prodigious output as for the ubiquity of the EQ imprimatur throughout the mid-20th century: Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, innumerable mystery fiction anthologies under their editorship, "Queen's Quorum," the Queen's Awards, etc.) NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE of the first edition dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing. A further NOTE about the dating of this book: although Grosset & Dunlap printing statements (e.g. "Sixth printing, September 16, 1930" in this book) are not always to be taken as accurate -- often their editions were reprinted from the original publisher's plates, and whatever printing information appeared there was simply carried over -- in this case I believe the printing of this book quite likely was very close from early 1931. This is based primarily on the fact that of the many books advertised in the nine pages of ads at the back of the volume, I didn't see any title that was published any later than 1929, and also because this title was advertised in a book distributor's catalogue as newly-available in a "Popular Copyright" edition (this one, basically) for the 1931-1932 season. At any rate, it's a very nice copy and will not disgrace your shelves while you're saving up your pennies to buy a true first in jacket.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. No Dust Jacket. 7th printing. (lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a professionally-made facsimile reproduction of same; see 2nd image posted with this listing) [a good sound copy with only minor wear to a few points at the edges and extremities, the original (1931) owner's name (in p…encil) on the front endpaper, along with a later owner's name plus date & place of purchase and a brief comment (all in ink)]. An early printing (from the original publisher, not a reprint house) of the third Ellery Queen mystery, in which Inspector Richard Queen and his mystery-writing son Ellery are called upon to solve the murder of an eccentric millionaress who has been murdered while in a diabetic coma in a hospital, about to undergo surgery. The printing history on the copyright page reveals that the book had already had two printings before its September 1931 publication date, and had already gone into its seventh printing (this one) by the beginning of December -- testament to the enormous success achieved by the Queen mysteries pretty much right out of the gate (and justifying the publisher's blurb quoting the London Times's assessment of Ellery Queen as "the logical successor to Sherlock Holmes." (It's also interesting to note that the publisher was still presenting the author as a man of mystery: their jacket blurb begins "Who is 'Ellery Queen'?" I guess it was a better marketing ploy than acknowledging that EQ was a pair of twentysomething cousins from Brooklyn.) This book was loosely adapted for the 1941 Columbia film ELLERY QUEEN AND THE MURDER RING, one of a series of programmers in which Ellery was played by Ralph Bellamy (later by William Gargan) and his father Richard by Charley Grapewin. NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing.
