Après un long séjour en Amérique, Joseph Mandrillon fut l'un des premiers à étudier le système politique des États-Unis.Il livre ici une analyse précise et critique des ressorts de la prospérité des 13 états américains, un an après leur indépendance. Dans la seconde partie, l'auteur développe ainsi l'idée que la découverte du Nouveau Monde a été payée par un massacre honteux et la prospérité, par l'esclavage? Mandrillon s'établira ensuite en Hollande où il publie des écrits politiques.Revenu en France, il est emprisonné comme correspondant royaliste du duc de Brunswick et sera guillotiné par les Révolutionnaires en 1794.

Owner's signatures on verso of front cover, covers slightly soiled. Interior somewhat warped throughout, title leaf somewhat soiled and foxed, pages 25-28 with small chip at upper corner, pages 160-176 with tiny hole at upper edge, part two with 0,5 x 3 cm chip at upper corner. The fold-out map slightly soiled and yellowed, tiny tear (ca 1,5 cm) in the left margin. First French edition of "The American Traveller" by Alexander Cluny, first published in English in 1769. The first French edition was translated and expanded by Joseph Mandrillard, and a second French edition was published in 1783.

G. Catter, pour le compte de M. L. P.» On trouve in fine une importante table alphabétique qui occupe les pages 493 à 519. Joseph MANDRILLON, littérateur français né en 1743, après avoir travaillé plusieurs années dans la banque, fit un long voyage en Amérique pour y former des relations. À son retour en Europe, il s'installa à Amsterdam où il ouvrit un comptoir, et partagea son temps entre les affaires et l'étude. Il adopta les principes des novateurs en Hollande et de la révolution française, et revenu en France, se lia avec les royalistes constitutionnels. Lors de l'établissement de la Terreur, il chercha vainement à s'opposer à la faction qui couvrait la France d'échafauds. Accusé d'entretenir une correspondance avec le duc de Brunswick, il fut guillotiné par les révolutionnaires en 1794.Sa relation de voyage aux États-Unis est assez pessimiste, puisqu'il s'efforce d'y prouver que la découverte de l'Amérique n'a pas été moins funeste à l'Ancien qu'au Nouveau monde. Not in Kress nor Goldsmiths. ~ Cluny, in his "American Traveller", details the development of agriculture, the experiments with new crops, and the movement of settlements further into the back country of the Colonies, and he seeks to show that the Colonies were self-supporting and not a drain on the British economy. In this edition, Joseph Mandrillon has adeptly translated Cluny's work, and has added his own Précis sur l'Amérique Septentrionale., describing the newly-formed United States, and providing an early printing of the treaty between the States and the Netherlands, which was, after the Treaty with France, the second alliance concluded by the newly-independent States. This work is often confused with Mandrillon's own Le Spectateur Américain, which was published in 1784. Cluny's text, written in 1769, is a valuable "survey of Anglo-American trade just prior to the Revolution"; Mandrillon's additions, almost doubling the volume, are an early appraisal of the young republic's status.

Joseph Mandrillon was born in Bourg, France in 1743 and died in 1794, guillotined during the French Revolution. He came to America in the hopes of establishing a banking-house, and returned to France at the beginning of the French Revolution, to ill effect. This is the first edition of this work on the natural and political history of the American colonies. "The author was desirous of being a member of the [Society of the] Cincinnati, and thought that Congress could take away the difficulty which prevented his membership" - Sabin.
