Diabetes ist eine der häufigsten Stoffwechselerkrankungen unserer Gesellschaft, der ein Mangel an Insulin und somit eine chronische Erkrankung der Bauchspeicheldrüse zugrunde liegt. Rund 7,5 Millionen Menschen in Deutschland sind laut aktuellem Diabetes-Atlas der International Diabetes Federation (IDF) erkrankt, die Dunkelziffer wird auf circa 2 Millionen geschätzt. Insulin ist ein Hormon, das in der Bauchspeicheldrüse gebildet wird und reguliert die Zuckerkonzentration im Blut. Es sorgt dafür, den Blutzucker zu senken, indem es an den Rezeptoren der Zellen andockt und dieser dort weiterverarbeitet werden kann (Glykolyse).Dieser Prozess sichert eine ausreichende Energieversorgung der Körperzellen und hält den Blutzuckerspiegel im Gleichgewicht. Wird kein oder zu wenig Insulin produziert oder freigesetzt, steigt der Blutzuckerspiegel, was schwerwiegende Schäden zur Folge hat. So haben DiabetikerInnen beispielsweise ein deutlich erhöhtes Risiko an Folgeerkrankungen, wie einer Herz-Kreislauferkrankung zu sterben. Diabetes Mellitus wird auch als 'Zuckerkrankheit' bezeichnet und lässt sich aus dem Griechischen ableiten: honigsüßer Durchfluss. Der Name resultiert aus den ersten Untersuchungsmethoden zur Feststellung eines Diabetes und geht auf eine erhöhte Urinproduktion bei hohen Blutzuckerwerten und den süßlichen Geschmack des Urins zurück.Es sind zwei Diabetes-Typen zu unterscheiden: Dem Typ-I-Diabetes liegt ein absoluter Insulinmangel vor. Es entwickelt sich eine Reaktion des Immunsystems, die die körpereigenen insulinproduzierenden Zellen (B-Zellen) angreift und zerstört. Die Bauchspeicheldrüse ist nicht mehr in der Lage Insulin herzustellen und das Insulin muss in Form von Spritzen injiziert werden. Wie unsere Beispielperson, sind mehr als 95 Prozent an einem Typ-II-Diabetes erkrankt, der inzwischen auch in jungen Jahren, vor allem aber in einem höheren Lebensalter auftritt und mit Übergewicht sowie mangelnder Bewegung assoziiert wird. Ziel der Abschlussarbeit ist es, ein Konzept mit Ernährungs- und Bewegungsempfehlungen zur Betreuung eines Typ-II Diabetikers über einen Zeitraum von 6 Monaten zu erstellen.…

An object recognition system is built, using neurons and synapses as exclusive building elements. The system contains a feature pyramid with 8 orientations and 5 resolution levels for 1000 objects and networks for binding of features into objects. This vision system can recognize objects robustly in the presence of changes in illumination, deformation, distance and pose (as long as object components remain visible). The neuro-synaptic network owes its functional power to the introduction of rapidly modifiable dynamic synapses. These give a network greater pattern recognition capabilities than are achievable with fixed connections. The spatio-temporal correlation structure of patterns is captured by a single synaptic differential equation in a universal way. The correlation can appear as synchronous neural firing, which signals the presence of a feature in a robust way, or binds features into objects.Although in this book we can present only a first generation artificial brain and believe many more generations will have to follow to reach the full power of the human brain, we nevertheless see a new era of computation on the horizon. There were times when computers, with their precision, reliability and blinding speed, were considered to be as superior to the wet matter of our brain as a jet plane is to a sparrow.
