The author was employed as ship's paymaster from 1845-47, and witnessing the miseries of the Great Famine in Ireland, counted himself very lucky to gain a place on the H.M.S. 'Fantome', which traveled to Australia and New Zealand from 1850-53. Malone wrote this work with future emigrants in mind, with two chapters devoted exclusively to the discovery of gold, gold diggings, the value of labor, contrast with American mines, and gold in Victoria. Includes sections on Western Australia, and a complete chapter on emigration, which includes advantages of Australasian Colonies over others; the passage out, who should and should not emigrate; land purchases; happiness in view for immigrants; and returns and commissioners' regulations. First Thus. Octavo. 20cm. Bound in recent marbled paper covered boards. [viii]; 302pp. Neat, bright and sharp, very light wear; internally clean and fresh, brown endpapers, a tiny chip to the upper edge of the title page, some occasional faint spotting, and some offsetting to the rather thin paper Murray employed. A very good copy indeed. Published simultaneously with the Carpenter edition, and generally considered inferior (most likely due to the insubstantial paper which has the effect of letting the type show through from the verso in places), but rather thinner on the ground in trade and less likely to be found in a pleasing condition. A very neat little book, attractively rebound, a sort of anecdotal grab bag of quotations, fragmentary compositions and essays focussed on the leading literary works and figures of the age.…
