Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - Within the rhetorical tradition lay an often unnoticeable, but at times marked suspicion about what was perceived to be effeminate and voluptuous language. Sensual and pleasurable language was thus understood as immoral in the same way as excessive corporeal pleasures were considered detrimental, and the notion of voluptuous language could result in a tension concerning the delights of poetry. This study develops ways to analyse how this poetic ambivalence affected poetry in early modern Sweden, where the notion of voluptuous language became especially strong, not only influencing poetry but also connecting to political and religious self-understanding. Treating this in connection with the media conditions of the time, the study attempts to clarify the phenomenon of Baroque. - From the content: Haquin Spegel -- Georg Stiernhelm -- Samuel Columbus -- Skogekär Bergbo -- Johannes Columbus -- Lars Lucidor -- Johan Runius -- Israel Holmström -- Gunna Dahlstierna -- Sophia Elisabeth Brenner. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Icelandic scholar and antiquarian Árni Magnússon (1663-1730) - Arnas Magnæus in Latinised form - spent much of his life building up what is by common consent the single most important collection of early Scandinavian manuscripts in existence. The collection, now divided between Copenhagen and Reykjavík, comprises nearly 3000 items, the earliest dating from the 12th century. The majority of these are from Árni's native Iceland, but there are also many important Norwegian, Danish and Swedish manuscripts, along with a small number of continental European provenance. In his new biography, Már Jónsson, professor of history at the University of Iceland, explores in particular how Árni Magnússon's great passion for parchment developed, and places it in the intellectual context of Árni's own time. Based largely on Árni's correspondence and notes on the manuscripts in his collection - many previously unknown to scholars - Arnas Magnæus Philologus offers a rare insight into this complex and intriguing man who did more than anyone else to ensure the survival of Old Norse Icelandic literature.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - What is the soul of poetry The most influential answer was probably given in Aristotle's Poetics, but even within that tradition which claimed the authority of Aristotle, the answers have differed widely. To Aristotle, the soul of poetry was one instance of mimesis, namely that construction of plot which he called mimesis of action, or muthos. However, in the Poetics alone, mimesis is used in several different meanings, and Aristotle does not distinguish clearly between them. The tremendous influence of his Poetics and the concept of mimesis may in fact be due to its elusiveness. Through tradition, it has been interpreted in many ways and translated into a number of terms, which do not always seem to have very much in common. This study is an attempt to clarify the Aristotelian tradition by demonstrating how interpretations of Aristotle's Poetics have vacillated between two particularly dominating instances of mimesis. The vocabulary may be the same, but the definition of the soul of poetry may differ substantially depending on which instance dominates. The study begins with an analysis of Aristotle's Poetics from a rhetorical point of view, as Aristotle developed his poetological categories inspired by those of rhetoric, and all interpretations of the Poetics up until the 18th century have been made from a rhetorical understanding of literature. Subsequent chapters then study exemplary reinterpretations of the soul of poetry within the Aristotelian tradition, beginning with Averroës, whose Arabic commentary was translated into Latin in the 13th century and for a long time was considered tantamount to Aristotle himself, receptions in the Italian Renaissance, French classicism and the influential launch of the 'Fine Arts' by Charles Batteux in the 18th century, and his German counterparts. Three concluding chapters apply the perspective on issues concerning the aesthetics of the sublime, the symbol, and the role of emotions in the system of genres.
