First edition. xxi, 198pp. In 1842, a retiring banker bought and interleaved the Paisley section of a copy of the new edition of Fowler's Paisley and Johnstone Commercial Directory. He annotated the Directory for his successors with notes…about many of the inhabitants of the town, their financial affairs, behaviour and characters. The book was discovered by John Malden in a secondhand bookshop in Paisley and offers a unique insight into Paisley of the 1830s-1840s, which was in a period of serious financial crisis, reflected by the notes. It has been transcribed by John Malden, who has written an Introduction to Paisley of the time. The book is bound in the original blue boards with gold titling on the spine. The book is in excellent condition and the contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper is in very good condition.
