Macmillan (1852-1889) was the son of Alexander Macmillan, the publisher. He "had no head for business" (Oxford DNB), and instead took an interest in literature and the arts. In July 1889 he and a friend were hiking on Mount Olympus when he disappeared; his body was never recovered. The present work selects from his letters, mainly written in Britain, but including those written from Rome and Constantinople shortly before the time of his disappearance.…
