As well as working in black and white, often photographing plant species for the first time, Reginald Malby employed colourists who would painstakingly apply colour to the 5cm square images using a magnifying glass and fine paintbrushes. The results are beautiful and have an almost hypnotic quality. Outside of the world of horticulture, Malby photographed rural buildings and landscapes and also took a small series of images of life on the streets of London in the 1900s which are wonderfully evocative. Also with Reginald Malby's business card loosely inserted with a handwritten note reading "From Miss Willmott!" - most likely Miss Ellen Ann Willmott the English horticulturist and highly influential member of the Royal Horticultural Society. Prov: Spetchley Park, Worcestershire. A unique copy. Reginald A. Malby, was one of the finest horticultural photographers of his era and both he and Walter Irving were rock garden experts. Malby's business card is hugely charming and his occupation reads 'Technical and Horticultural Photographer, Lanternist, Etc'. This work contains a chapter on the 'Saxifrages of the Pyrenees' by John H. Salter.
