Hardcover. Zustand: New. Contents Preface. 1. Environmental change and biodiversity global and Indian experiences. 2. Environmental change and biodiversity in Uttarakhand. 3. Environmental change and biodiversity conceptual framework and research design. 4. Environmental profile of Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve. 5. Land use/land cover change and biodiversity Using RS GIS and perception approaches. 6. Inventory of biodiversity using remote sensing and GIS. 7. Landslide hazard and biodiversity. 8. Biodiversity conservation global to local initiatives. 9. Conclusions and suggestions. Bibliography. Index. Unprecedented loss and changes in biodiversity are taking place at the genetic species and ecosystem levels in both terrestrial and marine groups of organisms. One of the major concerns of biodiversity loss is the reduction in the capacity of natural and managed ecosystems to render quality ecological services such as production of food and fibre carbon storage nutrient cycling and resistance to climate and other environmental changes. The extraction of biomass resources such as fuel wood fodder timber etc. which was once within the carrying capacity of forests has now crossed this limit in most the resource rich areas. Presently habitat conversion and destruction are eliminating species at such a rapid pace that extinction of contemporary species is leading to imbalance of ecosystem. The problem of biodiversity loss needs to be minimized in order to keep the ecosystem functional. Therefore assessing the causes and consequences of biodiversity loss and environmental changes and establishing the bases for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity are major scientific challenges of our time. It is against this backdrop the present study was carried out with multidisciplinary approach to answer the following questions What are the spatial patterns of environmental change and biodiversity loss and their driving forces across the world in general and the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand in particular. What are the linkages between land use/cover change landslides and biodiversity loss. To what extent community participation can help for conservation of biodiversity. The book will contribute to India's efforts in fulfilling the goals of the International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE) Kyoto Protocol and UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC). It will be useful for geographers environmentalists life scientists mountain experts and policy makers. 246 pp.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -This book provides information essential for anyone interested in climate and environmental change of the Himalayan region, including land and resource managers, environmental planners, conservationists, environmentalists, geographers, climatologists, ecologists, and students. The book is unique in its coverage of the current understanding of the science of climate change in the Himalayan mountain system and of the major impacts on physical systems and ecosystems. The book gives an overview of the physical science basis of climate change and explains drivers and processes of glacier and vegetation dynamics. The book covers relevant aspects of accelerated climate change observed in the Himalayan mountain system, and highlights the regional differentiation of climatic changes and associated environmental modifications. The focus is on climate variability and change, and how physical systems and ecosystems respond to climate change impacts. Consequences include impacts on physicalsystems such as glacier shrinkage, glacial lake outburst floods, altered hydrological characteristics, permafrost warming and thawing, and mass movements on slopes. Climate change is also a powerful stressor on ecosystems and induces range shifts of plant and animal species and alterations in terms of phenology, biomass, plant cover, plant group dominance and species composition. Thus, ecosystem structure and functioning will be strongly affected. The book has an introductory chapter followed by a section on climate change, a section on impacts on glaciers and hydrology, and a section on vegetation dynamics. Each section has several chapters presenting key concepts, major drivers and key processes of environmental change in the Himalayan region from different perspectives. Climate change impacts in the Himalaya have not been studied in much detail, and respective findings were not presented so far in a comprehensive overview. This book summarizes the current knowledge of interactions between climate change and the dynamics of glaciers, hydrology, and vegetation.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 416 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -This book compiles available knowledge of the response of mountain ecosystems to recent climate and land use change and intends to bridge the gap between science, policy and the community concerned. The chapters present key concepts, major drivers and key processes of mountain response, providing transdisciplinary orientation to mountain studies incorporating experiences of academics, community leaders and policy-makers from developed and less developed countries. The book chapters are arranged in two sections. The first section concerns the response processes of mountain environments to climate change. This section addresses climate change itself (past, current and future changes of temperature and precipitation) and its impacts on the cryosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and human-environment systems. The second section focuses on the response processes of mountain environments to land use/land cover change. The case studies address effects of changing agriculture and pastoralism, forest/water resources management and urbanization processes, landscape management, and biodiversity conservation. The book is designed as an interdisciplinary publication which critically evaluates developments in mountains of the world with contributions from both social and natural sciences.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 680 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -This book discusses the science, causes, impacts and risk reduction strategies for climate change and disasters. It focuses on the use of traditional knowledge, new innovation and education to build a culture of safety and resilience at all levels in order to promote sustainable development goals in general and disaster risk reduction in particular. The global climate has changed substantially over the last century. There is strong evidence of global climate change in the form of increase in air and sea surface temperature, recession of glaciers, changes and shifting of climate regimes, increasing number of extreme events and sea levels changes. The increasing frequency of climate change induced disasters in particular is posing a threat to resilience, lives and livelihoods at global, regional and local levels. Major ecosystems of the world have experienced several climate induced disaster events in recent past. This book provides new insights into the occurrence and impacts of climatic extremes and strategies for disaster risk reduction. It includes studies on rainfall and temperature trends, floods and drought disasters, weather and climatic related disasters in mountains, changes in plant activities, risk assessment and responses in different ecosystems of the world. The book is particularly useful for environmental and disaster managers, researchers and graduate students, as well as policy makers.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 328 pp. Englisch.
