Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Al-Fawa id al-saniyah fi al-rihlah al-Madaniyah wa al-Rumiyah by Qu b al-Din al-Nahrawali (d. 990/1582) is a unique book in its content and history and has been long-awaited to be seen in an edited publication. The present edition is based on the manuscript in Velieddin Efendi's collection of Beyazit Umumi Kütüphanesi in Istanbul. This manuscript is the author's draft of which he was unable to make a fair copy for public readership. This has rendered the editor's task much more challenging, requiring him to consult a corpus of significant historical, geographical and literary sources to finalize the current edition. The book includes historical and literary material relating to some Hijaz events in the mid-tenth century/sixteenth century. It also relates the author's many voyages within the Hijaz region and his trip to the court of Suleiman the Magnificent as an envoy carrying a letter of complaint from the Sheriff of Mecca against the Ottoman governor of Medina, Delü Piri. For an-Nahrawali, this book was so important that he used to take it with him on all his travels. He expressed deep sorrow when he lost it, and relief when it was recovered through the intervention of the sultan's son Beyazit. Although parts of his travel accounts have been published, this is the first time that the complete work of an-Nahrawali has been made available to scholars and researchers.

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. A joint study by the Geography Departments of Kuwait University and the University of Baghdad, attempting to describe present day Kuwaiti society and how it came about. Printed in Beirut by Dar Al-Qalam. Original printed wraps 17x24cm. 157, (1)pp Arabic text, with b/w maps, charts and data tables. Wraps about very good, lightly worn. Interiors very good with presentation ink stamp to the half title, and author's inscription to the title. This seminal study was motivated by the huge influx of other Arab and foreign workers into Kuwait prompted by the oil and development boom, and the need to take account of this in urban and social planning. Large scale immigration began to meet a pressing need, when Kuwait was still a simple traditional society lacking the administrative and technical agencies to support local development plans. It continued as Kuwait began to experience rapid fundamental social, psychological, economic and political change and growing wealth. Most came from other Arab countries, and the rest primarily from elsewhere in Asia notably Iran, India and Pakistan. Immigrants took up employment in construction and services. At the time of the 1st and 2nd Censuses (1957, 1961) immigrant and Kuwaiti populations were roughly equal. This had changed by the 1980 Census, with the immigrant population nearing 60% of total, and the authors were anticipating it to remain at around 60% for years to come. Their examination of the interaction and mutual influence between Kuwaitis and non-Kuwaitis covers the motives, causes and sources of migration. In comparison with Kuwaitis, they look at immigrants' demographic features, professional composition, socio-economic characteristics, their match to skills needed, distribution in particular neighbourhoods (with maps), housing types and conditions, crowding issues etc. Inscribed by Author(s).
