Zustand: GOOD. Reprint. A boys' adventure novel centered around flying, set in Canada, near Ontario, shortly after the first World War. A title in the "Young Moderns Book Shelf." 260 pp. Good overall in dark blue cloth with orange lettering on the spine, no dust jacket (a bit of soiling to edges of textblock, but a tight and straight copy).

Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Dust Jacket. An illustrated biography of on the top Allied fighter aces of the First World War, later Liet-Col Bishop, VC, DSO. The Canadian pilot was credited with seventy two victories. 246pp. Book appears to have been rebound in brown cloth with title details pasted on ot upper board and spine. Details from original DJ have been pasted onto fixed end paper. Free end paper missing. Pages toned.

Zustand: Very good. - Over 60 words typed on 9-1/2 inch high by 8 inch wide "Rector's Office, Trinity Parish" stationery. In his brief letter, William Manning informs James B. Pond that he "shall be very happy to serve as a member of the honorary reception committee for M. Maeterlinck on his visit to this country and to sponsor his first lecture". Signed "William T. Manning". Folded for mailing with a torn punch hole at the the top left corner. Very good. The rector of Trinity Church New York from 1908 to 1921, William T. Manning (1866-1949) was the Episcopal Bishop of New York City from 1921 until 1946. Bishop Manning led a major campaign to raise funds for construction on the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. In that capacity he directed a program to train and employ local men as artisans to work on the Cathedral during the Great Depression. Bishop Manning's beliefs could not reconcile themselves with those of the Nobel Prize winning philosopher Bertrand Russell and he led the effort to force the City University of New York to rescind their offer of a professorship to Russell.James B. Pond, the American impresario and lecture agent who headed the J.B. Pond Lyceum Bureau, brought the great Belgian poet Maurice Maeterlinck to America for a series of lectures. The first lecture took place at Carnegie hall on January 2nd, 1920. Unfortunately Maeterlinck failed to carry out his intention to lecture in English because of his labored "phonetic" English. He declared his intention to continue his lectures in French and have the translation read by another person. As a result, the lecture tour was a failure and lawsuits ensued on both sides.

Spine is faded a shade towards gray, while the rest of the boards retain original light blue. Pictorial endpapers. Gutter cracked at half title page, revealing backing linen. Evelyn Kendall's ownership name dated 1931 on the half title. Signed by the author, "W.A. Bishop" on the back of the frontispiece photograph. Frontispiece photo tipped in, but partially detached. No date on the title page. Copyright page dated only 1918. 272 pages. Illustrated with photographs, one or two of which are detached but set back in place. Gutter cracked at page preceding rear endpaper. Overall good condition, but a bit loose & would benefit from a few lines of glue, just to tighten everything up.
