Mackay and Co, Chatham, in a run of 500 copies as indicated to the copyright page. Covers good only, rubbed along the edges, boards tanned and foxed, with small areas of loss to the spine cloth. Interiors good or better, lightly tanned, cropped to the top corner of the blank ffep (leaving only the first initial of a previous owner's name), archival tape reinforcement to the hinges of the final section, map neatly folded with stub tear, Corrections leaf worn along the edges with a little loss (not affecting content). The final blank has neatly pencilled contact details for Mr Simpson, Manager of high end retailer and importer M.S. Hathaway and Co in Jubbulpore, and a list of hotels in Lahore and Karachi. Worldcat and Library Hub locate only 1 copy of this edition between them at the British Library (OCLC 221021751), with an online search locating another at the Australian War Memorial. They also record a 3rd edition (1930) but not the 1st. The first edition was prepared by Royal Engineers Institute Secretary Major A.T. Moore (1904), with this 2nd edition updated to March 1912 by Major E.C. Ogilvie. The Corrections leaf is dated September 1922. It originated as a pamphlet describing Foreign Stations for Royal Engineers, and was broadened during the drafting process to be relevant to other branches of the Army, and to civilian officials in Indian Government Departments (the material specific to the Royal Engineers was subsequently published separately). In two Parts, this covers Outfit etc, and General Description. Part I (Outfit) includes kit (plain clothes, underclothing, house linen, bedding, hats, boots, uniform, furniture, plate and crockery, saddlery and harness, weapons, shooting and fishing gear, boxes, miscellaneous), passages out and home (including packing), procedures on arrival (including up-country journey), servants, horses and dogs, bicycles and motor cars, post and telegraphs, amusements and sport (games, races, yachting and boating, fishing, hunting, pig-sticking, shooting), health, and hints for ladies and children (clothes, housekeeping, insects, furniture, occupation, exercise, leave, travelling, clothing and care of children). Part II (General Description) covers geography, climate, rail roads and canals, population and administration, military organisation and native army, history, languages (including exams), races castes and characteristics, religions, and descriptive books. Appendices cover coins weights and measures, shooting hints and list of big game, and vocabulary. The map, titled "Indian Empire", shows Military Commands and Stations and railways.
