Originally printed in The British Magazine with corrections and some additions. A collection of historical essays on the Dark Ages, with reference to the state of religion and literature. Includes chapters on the state of learning among the clergy, books presented to churches, the Bible in the Dark Ages, and more. Written by Samuel Roffey Maitland, an English historian and miscellaneous writer on religious topics who was qualified as an Anglican priest, and worked also as a librarian, barrister and editor. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with minor rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spine and board edges with the odd small mark to the boards. A small split in the cloth to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting. Pencil inscriptions to the front endpaper and title page. Very Good. book.

The first work is a detailed military history of the brigade commanded by Sir Robert Henry Sale (known as "Fighting Bob") during the First Anglo-Afghan War by George Robert Gleig (1796?1888), Chaplain-General of the forces and Inspector-General of military schools. The second is an account of colonial life by Julia Charlotte Maitland (1808-1864), a great-niece of the novelist Fanny Burney, who was a strong advocate for national education in India. She and her husband Charles, an Anglican priest ran a small school in Rajahmundry. From the library of Charles Porcher of Clyffe (1800-1863), High Sheriff of Dorset.
