ROBERT MAIN (1808-78) britischer Astronom, zuletzt Direktor des Radcliffe Observatory an der Oxford University. Er diente fünfundzwanzig Jahre (1835?60) als Erster Assistent am Royal Greenwich Observatory und veröffentlichte zahlreiche Artikel, insbesondere über stellare und planetarische Bewegung, stellare Parallaxe und die Dimensionen und Formen der Planeten. Von 1841 bis 1861 war er nacheinander Ehrensekretär, Vizepräsident und Präsident der Royal Astronomical Society und wurde 1858 mit der Goldmedaille der Gesellschaft ausgezeichnet. Der Mondkrater Main ist nach Robert Main benannt, und es gibt auch einen Krater auf dem Mars, der nach ihm benannt ist.
