This qualifies as simultaneously advantage as well as disadvantage for the scholarship, too. It was an advantage because just few information had been at scholarship's disposal through long decades. Furthermore, the literature concerning this theme was not easily available. The advantage of the above-mentioned marginality was actually concealed beneath that of the disadvantage. Upon basis of the less systemised documents, very interesting and colourful view unfolded upon the Armenians' confessional situation. The wars of liberation to terminate the Ottoman occupation, the integration of the Transylvanian Principality into the Habsburg Empire after 150-years'… relative independence, the colonisation of the uncultivated lands during the Ottoman rule, the re-organisation of daily life and Prince Francis (Ferenc) Rákóczi's independence war (17031711) indicated serious challenges for the Habsburg Court in Vienna. This period (1686-1711) felled serious duties to the Hungarian Catholic Church, too. Prior to these duties, the process of Counter-Reformation in Hungary's eastern and northern regions was getting increasingly under way: Orthodox Ruthenians and Romanians in Transylvania united with the Roman Catholic Church. The bishops, who were highly supported by the missionaries delegated from Rome in order to re-organise the Hungarian Catholic Church's religious life, re-appeared at the seats of the abandoned dioceses after the 150-years' Ottoman occupation and nearly 110-years' pressure from the strong Protestantism supported by the Princes of Transylvania. The Armenians' church-union in Transylvania must be, in fact, analysed in this church-historical context. The history of Armenians in Transylvania, escaping from Moldavia and Podolia between 1668 and 1672, should be regarded practically as an undiscovered area from both the Hungarian and international church-historical point of view. The church-union of the Armenians in Transylvania is primarily associated with Bishop Oxendio Virziresco's (16541715), an Armenian Uniate cleric educated at Collegium Urbanum in Rome, missionary efforts. In this work, I have tried to look for evident responses to these afore-mentioned problems, resting on the partly discovered and undiscovered sources as well as analysing critically a few of secondary literature. The author argues that the Ottoman presence in Hungary could mean the co-existence of Ottoman bureaucrats and soldiers with the indigenous population. Therefor the impulses of the Wittenberg Reformation quickly found a resonance in the humanist bourgeoisie of Transylvania-Saxon cities. A spiritual openness is to be noted, but also the ef…fort to inform the neighbouring ethnic groups directly about it and to convince them. Romanian and Hungarian translations and prints were published on site. Controversial theological debates led to a theological diversity imported but also independently developed up to the "early enlightened" undogmatic antitrinitarian movement. At first, the protagonists tried to harmonize the varying concepts of the Reformation on the basis of Melanchthon's theology, which can be demonstrated in theologically deliberately indeterminate formulations. The orientation towards Melanchthon remained decisive for the following decades. Against the backdrop of Ottoman dominance in the region, the intra-Christian religious discussions were ostensibly aimed at religious unity in the "estate monarchy" Transylvania. However, the freedom of proclamation regulated by law by the Transylvanian Diet offered prospectively the option of a homogeneously unitarian regional church, which Prince John II Sigismund aspired to. The analyses of theological and social developments as well as the culture of preaching that reflects them in this multi-denominational and conflict-ridden context show a contrasting model with Central Europe. The content of this volume focussing on these confessional formation processes that extend well into the 17th century, demonstrates a remarkable extraordinary religious development within the Transylvanian cosmos, in respect to the souzerainity relationship with the Ottoman Empire. After Merit addresses these gaps by (1) analyzing Calvin's tracts, scriptural commentaries and Institutes to demonstrate Calvin's unique distain for the doctrine of merit among the early Reformers and the pervasiveness of this polemic within his theological program; (2) reviewing the scholastic developments surrounding the doctrine of merit from the High to Late Middle Ages as background to Calvin's thought; (3) highlighting Calvin's principle problems with the doctrine of merit: the competitive-causal schema between divine and human causality, merit as a basis for justification, and good works as 'deserving' of reward; and (4) unpacking Calvin's theology of justification, sanctification, the worth of works, and the role of works in salvation as an alternative to the 'opponents' doctrine of merit. The volume concludes by reflecting on the reception of Calvin's theology of works and reward in later Reformed thought.

After Merit addresses these gaps by (1) analyzing Calvin's tracts, scriptural commentaries and Institutes to demonstrate Calvin's unique distain for the doctrine of merit among the early Reformers and the pervasiveness of this polemic within his theological program; (2) reviewing the scholastic developments surrounding the doctrine of merit from the High to Late Middle Ages as background to Calvin's thought; (3) highlighting Calvin's principle problems with the doctrine of merit: the competitive-causal schema between divine and human causality, merit as a basis for justification, and good works as 'deserving' of reward; and (4) unpacking Calvin's theology of justification, sanctification, the worth of works, and the role of works in salvation as an alternative to the 'opponents' doctrine of merit. The volume concludes by reflecting on the reception of Calvin's theology of works and reward in later Reformed thought.
