"The region of Chhattisgarh, geographically encompassed with hills and forests all sides, is a compact unit and is drained by many rivers. This peculiar natural set up seems to have helped in developing its culture and civilisation with its own distinct characteristics. In ancient times it seems to have been divided into two parts. While some of its northern areas along with adjacent portion of modern Orissa state formed the part of Kosala or Mahakosala and some portion of Bastar district was included in Dandakaranya or Mahakantara. We have sufficient evidence regarding its ancient culture when we come to the regime of Sarabhapuriya dynasty which was followed, successively and sometimes simultaneously, by the Panduvamsins of Mekala, Panduvamsins of Kosala, Somavamsins of Kosala, Kalachuris of Ratanpur and some other minor dynasties. The present work is based on the evidence gleaned from place names mentioned in the grants of these dynasties, which have been classified in this study on the basis of prefixes and suffixes and are arranged under different heads such as topography, flora, fauna, settlement, administrative divisions, social, economic and religious conditions chronologically. "The present work is the first ever systematic attempt towards tracing the culture and.…

"Extended from 17ª49' -22ª 34'N latitude and from 81ª 29'E-87ª 29'E longitude the state of Orissa has very beautiful topography and is well equipped with all sorts of natural sources. "It started its political career with the rule of the Nanda dynasty of Magadha and enjoyed the prosperous regime of the King Kharavela. After the downfall of Kharavela different dynasties ruled over the territory up to the end of twelfth century A.D. All these dynasties tried to bring more and more land under cultivation by giving grants of lands and villages to Brahmanas and religious institutions. They also grouped these villages into different units for their proper administration. Many scholars have studied these place names for tracing the historical geography of the region but these names have rarely been taken into account for tracing the cultural history of region. "Present volume presents the culture of Orissa as gleaned from place names mentioned in the inscriptions of the different dynasties and gives much emphasis on the meaning of the place names. The data obtained is corroborated and supplemented wherever possible and necessary with the evidence obtained from other sources (archaeological, literary, sculptural and epigraphical) and has been arranged under different heads such as 447 pp.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Contents: Introduction. 1. The land and people. 2. The pre-megalithic cultures of Deccan. 3. The megalithic types in the contiguous regions of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. 4. Excavations at Pochampad and Kadambapur.5. Comparative study of the megalithic burials of the Godavari basin with those found in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. 6. The races. 7. Chronology.8. Conclusion. Bibliography. Index. "The megaliths in the Godavari basin reveal the arrival of megalithic builders migrated from different areas of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The recent excavations of these burials at Pochampad and Kadambapur yielded rare specimens of pottery, viz., high- necked vases, bowls in curvilinear-shapes, tapering sides and perforated stands. The neolithic chalcolithic sites excavated from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh bear resemblance to the ones excavated in the Godavari basin which suggests that at different times the people from Karnataka and Andhra had migrated and settled in the Godavari basin, where they came into contact with the megalithic folks of Vidarbha. "The present work deals with the influence of earlier neolithic chalcolithic culture over the megalithic, the pottery types and their transformation, their burial patterns and cultural contacts that existed in the Vidarbha region and bears stamp of author's painstaking efforts in understanding the dynamics of cultural growth which the readers would find highly informative and fascinating. But there hardly exists any work tracing the progress of society and economy in Deccan from the period of the Satavahanas to that of that of the Yadavas with the help of the internal evidence from epigraphs along with archaeological literary sculptural and numismatic evidence. The present project is an attempt towards achieving this end. It is based mainly on the inscriptions issued by the kings of Satavahana Vakataka Calukya of Badami Rastrakuta Calukya of Kalyani Yadava and Silahara dynasties as well as of some other dynasties which had some sort of contacts with these royal families and the data obtained is supplemented and corroborated wherever possible and essential with the evidence available from other sources. Taking into account the vast gamut of the territory and the period the study is restricted to the region ruled by these dynasties and particularly to western and northern Deccan including Vidarbha. The other point to be noted here is that in order to have clear idea about the position of different so called castes in the society efforts are made to describe these classes in the context of their duties prescribed in Dharmasastras. Here an attempt is made to trace the beginning of different arts and professions based on each of these sources with the corroboration of the evidence from different sources. 528 pp.…
