This lesser-known side of his oevure infolds through 32 books, booklets, and pamphlets produced over a period of40 years.' Allan Kaprow was an American performance artist, installation artist, painter, and assemblagist . He helped to develop the "Environment" and "Happening" in the late 1950s and 1960s, as well as their theory. His Happenings some 200 of them evolved over the years. Eventually Kaprow shifted his practice into what he called "Activities", intimately scaled pieces for one or several players, devoted to the study of normal human activity in a way congruent to ordinary life. Although Kaprow was the acknowledged pioneer of the happening from the 1950s on, he is less often recognized as a pioneer in the genre of artist s books. Nonetheless, from the start Kaprow produced what he described as activity booklets --publications intended to function as tools to help people understand and experience such performances.
